Canon 7D, new competitor for M8 ?

Its probably going to be a nice camera, But not at all designed to compete with the M8. Its main competition will probably be the Nikon D700.
 
I just don't see how any SLR is a true competitor for a rangefinder, any more than a pitching wedge is a competitor for a #3 wood.
 
A nic second string for macro,tele and maybe some high-ISO work. The main advantage of Canons in general is that they take Leica R lenses.
 
I think the recent "Micro Four Thirds" press release is more interesting.

Sounds like a melding of the AF DSLR world and the RF world... weird.. mind you.. there's no viewfinder - which is a big draw for the RF crowd no?

I dont think it will be called the 7D. Just think what would happen when the replacement for the 7D came out, then it would be the 9D, then 11D then 13D etc etc etc.

Frankly the Japanese seem not to be able to name camera products too well. I still hear a lot of people who cant get the nikon/canon names right like d40 and 40d. What happens when the 450D line reaches 1000?

Hopefully Canon will take a page from Nikon's book and call it the "5D mark II ISCS WS SP FF HS 5FPSCS USMFS 3xPB 412S"

ISCS = Integrated sensor cleaning system
WS = Weather sealed
SP = Semi pro
FF = Full frame
HS = High speed
5FPSCS = 5 frame per second capture speed
USMFS = Ultra Sonic Motor Focus System
3xPB = 3 Print Buttons
412S = 412 screws (keeping the body together)

haha, avotius. a funny one. I was immensely chocked that how canon introduced 10d-20d-30d-40d in such short time. Canon made me big impact how they are greedy on their capitalistic marketing. All that made Nikon rapidly rising in my eyes as a true photo company :)

hahaha :) a little joke on canon and nikon, sorry, I couldnt help it.

You think that Nikon is coming out with cameras slowly? Every time I look at their line I see something else I have never heard of.

If you want slow and true photo company and base that off slower more deliberate product updates you have to give props to Leica or maybe Pentax for their molasses product line. I mention Pentax because that medium format digital we have been promised for so long....is....a....Plexiglas case space filler.

Besides, we all know (though dont hope) that by the time the Leica M9 comes out, the Canon 1DsmkMMMDCXXI will have shown up and will outnumber the M9's pixel count by MCMXCVIII million pixels (sorry, bad joke)

Avotius, I agree completely. Pentax is another company which I like. Pentax emerged with Hoya which is not neccesarily bad thing for me. Maybe the opposite, depending on how Hoya want to do. But my point is that Pentax is doing good optics and I like pictures out from digital KD. It reminds me more of Nikon :)

As you see, I'm settled with M-mount so Leica gives me peace of mind compared with Nikon-times when I had Nikon Dslr, lol.
 
The successor to the 5D has been rumoured for over a year and a half now. Until i actually see a press release from Canon, I won't believe any of these "insider" news.

While I am a Canon shooter (and NOT an Canon enthusiast), I couldn't agree with you more. It seems like Canon's methodology of shotgunning the market with new models, and not necessarily new features, is starting to back fire on them. Each time Canon puts out a new consumer/pro-sumer level DSLR its features are only incremental and not very earth shattering from the previous model, whereas Nikon takes their time to bring out a new model and each time they do, they really seem to turn heads and get buzz going.

When DSLRs first got popular, Canon had the market by the short and curlies. But they've been sitting too comfortably on their thumbs much too long and other companies, especially Nikon, have caught up and have even surpassed them. Now Canon's trying to play catch up.

There's also Hasselblad. And their new equipment prices make new Leica equip the Proletariat's Choice.

...and Pentax/Practica screwmount, and Olympus Zuiko, and Contax SLR, Hasselblad, and most ironically, Nikkors too. It's like being A-B-positive blood type :D Plus if you want AF, Canon's are all in-lens motor. I admit I'm thinking down the road to picking up a D700 once it gets replaced, because I have a bunch of manual F-series Nikkors and it's nice to not have to stop them down for each shot and open up to focus. Still, I expect to travel with the M8 or its successor, because the FF Canon and Nikon bodies are more than I care to haul around, not to mention the bulk of the lenses and the bag needed to encase them.

The only thing interesting to me about the 5D replacement is the thought of picking up a like-new 5D for $1000 or less when all the must-have-the-latest guys dump them.

Actually you can even use quite a number of older leica M lenses on Canon.:cool:

How do you know there's no viewfinder? All they're saying is that's no mirror. That means the same as a rangefinder camera. I don't think we'll see an optical finder on the first models, but not impossible later on in higher end models..

Could also mean live-view only. I'm not sure that would go down too well with RF users. Or an EVF, also not a popular choice.
 
What I would like to see is live view implemented through a viewfinder, i.e., an SLR-type experience through a miniature internal screen rather than a mirror & prism.

That is called an EVF (electronic viewfinder.)The Leica Digilux 2 for instance, an excellent camera with a bit of a cult status.
