I have to say (at the risk of annoying someone here) that I am not convinced that the black 50/1.8, with which I have a fair amount of experience, is either sharper or more contrasty than the 50/2.8, at least between F5.6 and F11. Of course it has the speed edge advantage and being able to shoot at F1.8 can certainly make or break a shot.
I just found a very clean Canon 50mm f/2.8 zebra lens and did a quick test. I have noticed that the Canon S lenses perform better about f/5.6 or f/8.0. This is not surprising. I was very pleased with the color and sharpness of this 1950's lens.
