I understand now, it's called 'swirly bokeh' if you go to flickr you can search for images like that.

About my subject matter if you go to my blog archives you will find quite a lot of it
 
By saying it looks "weird", I meant the physical look of the lens, not the pictures it takes. This lens is collapsable but the design looks modern. Also when it's fully expand, the middle part is actually thinner than you'd imagine. That's why I said it looks weird.

As for popularity, I think it's less mentioned because it's supposed to be sold with the special 250-year model of R3M, instead of an independent product.
 
Yeah, the collapsible aspect is kind of worthless. I just leave mine extended--it doesn't collapse all that much. I did indeed get mine with an R3M, but now use it with an R4A.
 
The only weird thing with the 50/2.0 Heliar is it should collapse deeper into the camera as it actually does. Collapsed it is shorter than any other f/2 lenses available in RF! You should not compare it with an old Summar/Summitar in this aspect...
Why it is collapsable at all? Because of tit's length when extended. Heliar designs were always LONG lenses in history (probably one reason why old Voigtländer made it for 35mm film) - this one is no exception...

@ deep' and mabel' ; I get it regarding the extension thing, I'm just used to it so it no longer 'registers' as being weird, now it's just another lens. I use mine mostly with an R4a because I shoot mostly wide. However it works better on my R3a with the larger framelines.

i like the thing it is collapsible - when i put my camera with jupiter 8 in some small bag i use they are very tight inside. camera with heliar would be easier to put in. i dont use camera bag - i found bag from some medical instrument - so i use that.
