Yeasterday I have found that my 50mm summicron tabbed 50, with extended hood started to don't focus on infinity...

When I look on the image which is far away, it didn't focus even how hard I'm trying to shift it to the "infinity"... And when I looked closely to the lens, I have found that it about one, or one and a half millimitres didn't fit the middle of the "infinity" picture...:(

What shall I do?.. Can anyone help me?.. :bang:

PS: sorry, didn't find anything familiar in the past threads...

Hi Palo!.. Nice to see you here!..))

That's an interesting topic you gave me... Is this the only reason why my MP can't focus on the infinity?..
Yesterday when walking on the bridge over the Siene, in Paris, it was quite shoking when this showed up... If you know what I meen...

So, I have two thoughts about it...
1) If there could (somehow?) be some "dust" in the lens, that confused it functions on turning exactly arrow-the middle of the iinfinity...
2) Needs the rangefinder adjustment...

I heard a lot of this adjustment, but didn't know exactly WHAT it actually meens... Now, when I red this article you gave me, I'm a little relax, but steal I need somehow to do this adjustment on my MP...
If there are some more instructions on how it needs to be done, with the pictures of what I need to do...

As I understand it - I just need to find screwdriver and easily turn the screw between the rangefinder and the brightline windows... Right?.. Oh... And when I will be watching how did I do... Do I have to watch the moon?.. :) Or I can just go on the street and find some far-a-way building?..

I understud that I don't need to use force... What else can I do wrong?..

Nugard,
Do NOT fiddle with your MP by yourself... And before deciding it is the camera, you might try it with another lens to see if there is a difference. An easy way to check if you rf is misaligned is either to point the camera at a target 1m away (as measured with the tape from target to film plane (about 5mm from the back of your camera), set the lens to 1m mark and then check the RF, or to place a focusing screen from an slr camera at the back of your Leica, focus on a target ( you set the exposure to B and you use a loupe to magnify the target), and then check if the rf coincides. You can also focus on the moon or a star if you prefer to check the infinity. If this check will tell you your MP has to be realigned, you should bring it to an authorized Leica repair specialist, as this job on the modern Leicas requires a special tool and a precise procedure. You can also send it to Solms directly, but it will be slow.

OK... I hear you... Right now I'm looking for the tape...

I'm now in the Hannover... I will be here for the five days, and then will be my another journey to the Belgium-Luxembourg-Amsterdam (it will be a three-day-journey, so on one day I have only one country), then on 26 august I will be in Hannover for one more day, and then, will leave to Slovakia (once again ;) Pretty bad, I would be able to see you again, Palo...), and then back home to Ukraine...

So... Where shall I start looking for this Leica-repair-master?..

Mfogiel, I have noticed that from one meter it also seems to be slightly inexact... I have only one lens to make it sure...

So it needs to be adjusted... Is it possible to make it by myself, or I need to find master?.. My just-bought (used) MP, still has warranty to 2009...

Right now I think that the problem is more in the camera... But yesterday, when I didn't know what to do, I thought that it's the lens... That it doesn't move to the exact middle of the infinity point...

Had you some experience with that kind of situation?..

And BTW, if I gonna meet with the repair master, and he will fix it... Then how long will it last to the next necessary adjustment?..

Vladimir,

it's quite common to buy a second-hand camera with misaligned rangefinder at infinity, all mine had it. For experienced repair master with right tools it's actually matter of minutes to adjust it. There's no need to disassemble the camera, all screws are relatively easily accesible.

Palo

Today is Sunday... Tomarrow I will call this master, and also maybe dealer, witch I saw on the Leica Dealer Locator...
I'm sure my beauty will be just fine... It's just a matter of time and m patience...

PS: Palo, I have a small "Souvenir" for you... Some stupidity, but still, when I saw this in Paris I just remembered you... Maybe later, I will "give" it to you))

To give some technical advices to that problem, I have to say, there are more possibilities than just a misalignment of the rangefinder....

What could make such a infinity problem happen:

A The Camera Body

In your rangefinder you have mainly two directions, where misalignment could happen
1. Vertical
2. Horizontal
3. Individual adjustments for all frames

With point 1 you will have a missmatch with the rangefinder patch in hight, with the 2. point you will have it in distance.
The 3. point is nothing for the normal user...

As in the articles mentioned above (Leica FAQ), you will find there a good discription on how to adjust your body....

You should use proper tools for the repirment....
If you do not have the special tool for the vertical adjustment of the rangefinder of the newer M´s you can also use a screwdricer - but it is no fun - and you have to work carefully!!!!!!!
B The Lense

1.
If you unscrew the bajonett, you will find under it a round pice of aluminium.
In this pice you will find a second round pice, which you also can see if the lense is not deassembled - it is the coupling to the rangefinder-roller.
This thing is screwed into the aluminum part.
You will also find two rectangular sparings, which coupples the system to the focus system of your lense.

You should now mark the aluminium part with the rangefinder couppling with a small drop of colour as the lense is turned to infinity - this helps you to remind the beginning of the whole procedure.

Now you have the chance to deassemble the two parts by unsrewing them - if you turn to the next point of the spindle you will find out, that now the rangefindercoupling starts on a different hight, with this technique, you can adjust the lense focus to the rangefinder.

It is very easy to check this with an M8, because you can find out the results of your adjustment directly on the screen.

This sort of adjustment is only necessary, if someone opened the lens and did not fit the system together with adjustment, sometimes you have that on e-bay bought lenses....

2. You have another spindle, with wich the glass package of the lense is brought into the lense focussing-system - it works equal to the first describtion - if you turn the package and start with some mm away from the original screw in point, you get a different focus on a specific distance.

Do not unscrew both things at a time, because you have than too many parameters to fit the things in the right way togeter.

I alsways start with the rangefindercoupling-system of the lense, if that does not work, i start to adyust the focus of the system - but do not try that with an analog m - you need the direct response of your work....

To check wether the body is faulty or the lens is, you need at minimum two lenses to check the body.

If you have just one lense, which is not realy sharp with the rangefinder adjusted correctly - it is normally the lense.

Be careful, there are lenses, which have a different construction, which is not so easy, as described above.
For example the 40mm CL, the 75mm Lux.....

I hope it is clear, what I mentioned, because my english is not so good to describe such complicated technical things....

Greetings Ekki

Thank's guys!..
I have visited the repair master, that Palec showed...

He fixed everything less then 5 minutes, and didn't take any money... And that's after my phonecall in Foto Haas(Leica dealer in Hannover), and they said that I only can send it to Solms with their help...

Very-very nice Master, wich I would highly recomend to all of you, who will be in Hannover... ( http://www.fotomechanik-kielgas.de/ )

So, thanks again for your help... ;)
Cheers!..)))

Good to hear it's sorted now in very elegant way. I wish there was such service somewhere nearby, too.
So, after the dramatic twist you can now enjoy the rest of your vacation trip :)

For sure... In few days I will go to little tour on the BeNiLux countrys... And maybe on my way back home, we will stay in Slovakia for 2-3 days, because Guliash is too good for me... I just can't help it))
BTW - did you taste it in the Chata Zamkovskogo?..

It's a pitty you work, and we can't enjoy remembering English talking about Leicas, and photos, and other things that don't really matter, but HOW do we FEEL about it ;)

enjoy of Cron :D I guess you havent printed images yet?

Noap... :) I have one or two rolls in my backpack already... And one in the camera... All are B&Ws... For color I use my happy-camera OM-1n...

When I will come back home, I will write a little-tiny note about my incredible trip, and my getting used to MP a la carte... :D
