I broke down and bought the 50mm f/1.8 chrome/black lens from KEH.

What can I expect from it as far as quality?

I have a 40mm-40.5mm step up so I'll be able to use my 40.5mm filters and hood on it.

Colyn:

Congratulations.

Expect excellent performance beyond expactations. It makes other 50mm lenses whince in pain. :D

The 50/1.8 lens looks GREAT

What can one expect from the 50/1.4 .......is the signature much different ?

Best- h :D

Hi Helen,

The Canon 50/1.4 is another great lens. Some refer to the rendition as "cool" when compared with the Canon 50/1.5, but I like the lens a lot.
I will look for some images taken by it.

Here is one:

Thanx Raid
Your wife looks Great in the photo

Just trying to figure now that I have the j50/1.5
what would be a nice compliment ? ANY SUGGESTIONS......
the 50 rigid cron
the 50 planar
or the canon 50 1.4 /1.8

Decisions..... Decisions.....
But I do think i just want to narrow my life down to TWO lenses
Be very Zen & Disciplined and JUST SHOOT
a GREAT 50 & a GREAT 21

Best-H

Helen and zen :p

i say narrow it down to three.

get the two lenses that most float your boat -- the SA and the Summarex. for the 50, a Planar would be a total change and complement them nicely.

then go out and shoot. do not stick your nose in this forum. Raid will have you lusting after every Canon lens ever made and then some. he's dangerous! but ever so helpful -- truly.

(words of wisdom written by a total lens slut who is currently lusting after the Canon f/.95)

This is a sweet little lens which produces fine shots. I bought the 1.4 years ago and liked it. Then finally succumbed to the desire to own the 1.8 last year. (I am sure you know how that feeling is.) I do not regret it.

CAM: About Time you did an avatar...
an a LOVELY calve indeed /w/the lux ?

You see Eric takes all the lenses I get bored with unless i trade them

as for lenses:
i think my search & conquest is NEAR
the 21 SA / found one
& the 50 /toss up between planar and rigid cron

(the canon 0.95 is DIVINE BUT hard to find & absurdly priced)

Mind you I have friends coming from Paris/London at the end of Sept

Best to You & K
-H :)

The 0.95 is too big and too heavy for a standard lens.
It is a great show-off though. Your camera is suddenly on Viagra. [joke]

For RF photography, a 1.4 or 1.5 is sufficiently fast.

not to worry, Raid. neither Helen nor i are faint of heart... besides, i think it's a very apt description :p

i know the f/.95 is a big, show-off lens and not much more (nor was i recommending it to Helen), but wide open... sigh. another thread.

and sorry i hijacked this one, colyn. the Canon 50's seem really sweet and i look forward to seeing your photos and reaction when you get it. that's always the worst part, isn't it? pressing the "buy" button and then impatiently having to wait...

Used a Serenar (all chrome) 50/1.8 with an M3 and a VT Deluxe for 17 contented years. Had the hood made for it, which was necessary.

This one of my all time favorite. Unfortunatelly I sold it to buy an Heliar Classic (which I also love), I had a "As New" Canon 50/1.4 in unbelievable condition. I will live to regret selling it!

Very sharp with a pleasing bokeh.

I love old canon lenses for their over all look in images, my 50 1.8 on the AE1 is still a great overall lens. I think you will be pleased.

This is an outstanding lens, fully comparable with modern multicoated lenses of the same or close-to formula. The sharpness and OOF rendition is on par with a black pre-ASPH Summicron 50/2. It's one of my best 50mm lenses, and I love it.

Yet many of them suffer from :

1/Haze on the glass elements that directly face the aperture blades
2/Sticky oil deposits on the aperture blades
3/Acid fungus in the rear group.

Carefully inspect yours as soon as you receive it.

Below is a shot I took in last April in an old printing workshop.

Canon P camera, Canon RF black and chrome 50/1.8 lens, Ilford XP2 film.

Aperture was f/2.8 I'm pretty certain.
