Ricoh GRD DOF table? Also some other questions.

I know a few of us out there use the GRD camera, I do, in fact today I shot my 15686'th photo with it. Lots of use! Anyway sometimes I run into a small little problem using SNAP mode, I dont know how much depth of field there is at different apertures. Anyone know of a table or something that shows this? If I remember right SNAP mode focuses to 2 meters (dont quote me on that) and for me that is a little too long as I typically more in 1.5 meters when shooting on the street so it would be nice to know a little more for sure what kind of DOF I am getting at different settings.


Oh and couple other little questions while im at it.

The rubber body covering on my camera seems to have swollen and peels off sometimes while im using the camera, can I use super glue on it or is there some sort of thing like double sided tape or whatever I should use?

My battery rarely fits right in the charger, I have to stick something in behind the battery to get the contacts to connect and the light to show up. My girlfriend has a panasonic point and shoot and turns out the battery is exactly the same as the ricoh one and the charger worked great. Anyone else have problems with the battery? I also noticed that sometimes the door on the bottom of the camera will not engage the battery to the contacts all the way and I have to fumble with it a bit then it works ok.

I sometimes like to use burst mode but when I shut off the camera burst mode disengages, is there a way to have it not do that?

Does the GRD 2 actually have faster write time for files? One of these days my GRD will break (I use it a hell of a lot) and if and when it does, I wont be moving to anything else.

Despite all that I love my GRD, I have shot so many great photos with it and even though its a tad noisy (grain and focus sound) I still find it highly capable. For those of you who have bothered to read down this far, a little something, I shot most of this with a GRD and some of it with a Leica M6 and Zeiss 50 planar. Called "One and a half horses":

DOFmaster calculates that at 5.6mm focal length, 2.8 aperture, focused at 2 meters, the DOF extends from .96 meters to infinity.

I stuck my rubber back with Evostick it was just the corner and I cant open the little door where the USB plugs in since .I think it was playing with the door that loosed it in the first place and I take the card out and download straight into my PC so its no problem.

Never had a problem with the battery charger mine fits tight.The GRD 11 writes faster RAW but I dont have one.I am happy with the GRD for me its a true replacement for the GR1 which I still have and the R1 thats lurking around somewhere too. Its a fun camera

ps: The GRD lens is 5.9mm not 5.6mm as quoted in the previous post.

Thats what I do too, I just take the card out and download with a reader to the computer, mainly because the first day I had the camera I opened that little rubber door and found that if I opened it too many times it would never close right again, so I never opened it again.

true, but one thing that is good about this is I get faster shutter speeds because I can use a bigger aperture to get the same amount of DOF, which is fantastic for street photography. Sure I would like to have some selective focus, but if I really need that, enter my Leica m6.

DOFMaster or DOF Calculator will tell you this.

Use double sided tape or if your camera is still under warranty have Ricoh replace the handgrip for you. Ricoh does not recommend to use glue as they need to remove the handgrip for servicing the camera.

This seems to be a problem with the particular battery you have. I would replace it with a new one to avoid any problems.

No, unfortunatelly it won't remember this even when you save it as My Setting 1 and use this when starting the camera. The GRD II remembers everything though, shame the last firmware update could not take care of that on the GRD I.

The write time is a lot faster even for JPGs, the LCD is better and overall it feels more responsive but the AF in good light is slower, it has focus priority instead of shutter priority and the JPGs and high ISO RAW files are not as good. BTW, I'm over 50K shots with my GRD and it is still working fine except for a dead battery and some weird behavior with some SD cards, specifically when I delete pics using the GRD menus....
