Canon 5D + Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 XR Di (faux cross-process)


Yesterday, I was already with a bit of low energy, so I knew I didn't have the mental energy to use a rangefinder, and brought along the Canon 5D. I took advantage of meeting my gf for lunch over in downtown St. Paul, just one block away from Rice Park, where the "safest/most accessible" hot spot could be found.

I just thought the above would be an interesting "memento" for the whole spectrum of politicos here on RFF.

When the Press actually begin report things unfiltered, without "commentary", that's when we'll get news and events as they are, not through some filter.

Impossible.

Where you are; where you point your camera; the people you choose to talk to; that's immediately a commentary or filter.

Consider the man in uniform holding a poster (great shot). That's not commentary or filter? Or the green suit/Goldwater shot?

I'd rather have an honest bias than a milk-and-water pretence at objectivity -- or worse still, a cynical pretence at objectivity by someone who relies on his audience being too stupid, naive, ill-educated or idealistic to spot the bias.

This is my main issue with the RD1; the difficulty to blur wide open during a sunny day. At 1/2000 the largest aperture you can use without blowing is F4 to F5.6.

An 8x ND filter works really well. 🙂

No one makes it all the way, but the attempt to filter out subjectivity is a noble undertaking, even if it will always fail to some degree. First, there's a difference between an attempt and a pretence (look at the words I actually used).

In the attempt, one comes to recognize (and, one would hope, acknowledge) where one falls short.

Refusal to recognize or acknowledge such shortcomings is worthy of contempt.

::sigh:: they say language is what separates humans from the animals. In a world where language is so carelessly "used" (or looked at with disdain), I can only (figuratively) weep for humanity.

You are correct, a "filter" is always there. But the explicit is meant for the masses to digest, and the implicit for the few to manipulate. The explicit is easily quotable in seconds, and easily debatable. It is to this lowest common denominator that I'm (well, was) referring to.

An 8x ND filter works really well. 🙂

But a top speed of 1/8000 is even better when you're doing photoreportage in contre-jour now, in-the-shade-the-next-minute, and-they're-off-like-a-bat-out-of-hell-so-try-and-freeze-them conditions! 😀

Funny that you mention that (the "very realistic looking" part): I treated this with the help of two plug-ins: Imagefactory's B&W Convert Pro (no longer supported) and Niksoftware's Silver Efex Pro. I then burned the edges to give it that "printed from a negative" faux feel.
