It used to be 28 for me.....
Now I bounce between 35 & 50
50 becoming the sweet spot for more intimacy
with my catches on the Street

At present I'm preferring more bigness of the subject & less backdrop, clutter in a photograph

Having used the Contax G2 for 10 years, the 45/2 Planar my favorite lens, I went with the 50/2 Planar with my new ZI rather than going a little wider with the 35mm. I'm sure both lenses are excellent, and it becomes a matter of preference regarding the angle of view.

I have a 35 cron so 28mm was too close in focal length to bother with, I use 21mm only occasionaly so the fine VC 21 mm was good enough and priced right.

Almost everyone makes a good 50mm so I got a Konica Hexar f2.0. So for me the lens I needed and was willing to pay for was the Zeisss 25mm Biogon which just happens to be their best resolving lens according to Zeiss.

I wish Zeiss made a 75mm F2.0 because the Leica is out of my bugetary range. I have a Leica 90mm F2.8 thats great too.

I find the focal lengths I ended up with are spaced almost perfectly on the basis of their angle of coverage.
 
For street it's the 25 followed by the 35. I'm not sure I would look at any of the ZM lenses as great street lenses as they are so BIG. I think in street shooting size does matter and I think you want smaller. I'd go with the CV 25 and a 'Cron 35, but that is me. If you could get it in M I'd actually prefer the new 35/1.8 Nikkor, but I have a sickness, I love great Nikkor glass.

MHO: Go for a 50mm or 35mm. Those are the two classic focal lengths. I find it easier to concentrate on the substance of the photograph when I'm not distracted by unnatural perspectives (especially on the wide end).
 
Perhaps a reflection of my own weaknesses in composition, but I find I do better isolating my subject more over inclusion of his/her environment, and thus favor the 50mm focal length over the wider FOVs for both straight and candid portraiture. My 1.5/50 Sonnar is inevitably the lens I first place on the ZI when I start out to shoot those around me, followed closely by 2.0/75 apo-S or 2.0/85mm Sonnar if the setting calls for more reach. I favor the 2.0/35 and the 2.8/21 Biogon when scenery gets involved, though the 75 is best for fine detail up close. Pining for the 25ZM, but must sell my Leica 24/2.8 Elmarit first (anybody?).
So I guess my vote went for the 50mm, but I'm glad I can carry more than one lens with me when I actually venture out into the real world.
