Do the frame lines reflect angle of view of true 28, 35, 50 lenses; in which case you see more in the finder than will actually be on the sensor, or do I need to use ultra wides to get the same angle of view as in the viewfinder?

Thanks,

The framelines correspond to what you will actually get with that lens on the R-D1. So the 28mm framelines, for instance, will show you a FOV that's roughly equivalent to 42mm on a film camera.

If you want to get on the R-D1 what you will normally get on a film camera, you need a wider lens. So:

28mm lens = 42mm equivalent, use 28mm framelines
35mm lens = 52mm equivalent, use 35mm framelines
50mm lens = 75mm equivalent, use 50mm framelines.

It's a lot of fun to use ultra-wides on the R-D1, like the CV 15mm and 21mm. You get less vignetting than on film M cameras, and they are still pretty wide.

now my head is spinning......for my m6 my fav focal lengths are 21mm (i use the 28 framelines), 40mm (I use the 35 framelines) and 90mm, well I use the 90 framelines for that.

so to get the same effect with the RD1 what new lenses should I get?

CV 15mm Heliar
Any 28mm
And the 90 is kind of tough, since there's no 60mm RF lens out there, but your 50's will get you semi-close.

Just, whatever lens you use on the R-D1, it acts like it's 1/3 less wide.
