Nikon Prices Explode at Christies Auction, London

While everyone was sleeping...the auction for Lecia & Nikon cameras at Christies in London triggered a major bullish tidal wave of higher prices for Nikon Rangfinder & SLR cameras, lenses and accessories.

Here are a few examples..... Lot 40 Nikon F1.1 50mm lens,hood caps....Price $9,120 USD or 4560 Pounds Sterling.

Lot 21 Nikon SP Camera with 50mm F1.4 lens Mint - with box $4080 USD pr 2040 Sterling !!

Macro Rangfinder 50mm lens with hood, caps Lot 39...$4560 USD or 2280 Sterling.

Lot 38 Black SP Body " only".....$9120 USD or 4560 sterling

Lot 41 Nikon 105mm F2.5 with box / not new but near mint...$ 1200 USD or 600 Sterling.

The bigest prices wen for the wide angle area for both SLR and rangfinder Nikons. the Lecia equipment was really flat with no serious heavy bidding. Then Medium Formatt equipment was the dog of the acution. A Hassy 500 C/m with both a noirmal 80 mm and 50mm with 3 film backs sold for under 400 dollars US !!

Even the old Nikon F bodies were selling well above anything you see on Ebay.

Nikon f2 Titanium bodies no lenses were selling for over 5,000 USD !

So now we see a big trend by major collestors world wide toward the Nikon market, but also the real problem for american collectors is that the US Dollar is getting hammered into the ground by the Euro. what that means is that prices made a major move to higher levels yesterday, Mostly due to currency problems with the dollar.

What this means is that thte 21mm Nikon Ranfinder kit will most likley be going from 8,500 USD to 10 or 12,000 in the very near future.

It could have something to do with Christies closing their Camera Auctions forever,I believe the last sale will be in a couple of months!!

I posted the auction info because several major new world record prices were established. Also I think that it shows a major shift in the trend of major collectors. Also the currency factor of the decline of the US Dollar is another real factor that is going to have major long term negative effects on camera prices for american collectors. The christies people were very surprised, in some cases the final selling prices were a multiple of 3 or 4 times the projects in front of the event.
 
This WAS Christies last camera auction and the "Swan Song" of legendary, classy, unruffled auctioneer, Michael Prichard. He is off to new pastures enlisting for a PhD in a photo-related subject - a young looking mature student! As I understand it Christies will continue the sell of "Photographs", as this falls under their Art Sales marketing strategy.

By the way, no-one mentioned the Hasselblad that sold for £16,500 (c.$33,000)

This was a specially modified (but normal looking) model for training space mission personell. The mind boggles on how these special, government purchased models, find their way to the open market. Do US authorities sell off unwanted valuable surplus, or do they fall-off the government lorries?

The government does sell its surplus. As far as the space program equipment, the Smithsonian gets first refusal. This probably was not that unique to collect for them or they already had a sample.

We had auctions for lots of Leica cameras at the Naval Air Station when I was not interested in rangefinder cameras ....

I guess we can expect to see prices by eBay sellers Camera$/VillageGoodies and Arsenelll to reach new heights of absurdity in the near future.

One reason the Leica prices were "flat" may be because those models are still available new - you don't need auction houses to buy them. Not so with original Nikon Fs. Of course, you don't need auction houses for those, either.

Yesterday I was looking at "world's most expensive wines", and nearly everything was auction house stuff. It's amazing what some well-heeled people will shell out to get something, usually not for use but for 'collector' value. A bottle of wine once owned by Thomas Jefferson is probably totally undrinkable since long ago. Not even Lafitte-Margaux keeps forever.

One needs to keep in mind, though, that Costco doesn't carry original Nikon Fs, at least not any more. If someone wants a relatively dated (by now) camera, let them pay what the traffic will bear as long as they want it so badly and are willing to pay the tariff.

well if the US dollar was the major driver for the higher prices, than shouldn't they be higher across the board? surely, leica prices would have also jumped in line with the prices for nikon gear. maybe the auction was just full of folks bullish on nikon gear?
