Firmware update is done and instantly noticed that the start-up time is quick! I mean QUICK!!
And the format time is also QUICK!!!
I also really like that I can hit SET button and change settings while the buffer is flushing!!!!!
For now, I am happy with the new firmware.

Hm. I wonder if the people complaining that noise in the images look the same with the new firmware all shoot RAW-Format? I don't think a firmware can change the noise level of the sensor captured in a RAW-file. But Improvements are possible when shooting JPG with an optimized JPG-Engine.

Okay, last test examples of boring pics of my cats and kitchen sink.
This was shot at ISO 2500, 1/250 sec at f/2 but in JPEG Fine and with colour saturation set to b/w.
My first thought when you posted the color version was ... "wow, I want to see that in B&W ... the noise pattern looks like it would be some beautiful grain."
And whoa was I right. That's simply beautiful in terms of texture. Makes me so happy to be an M8 owner ... can't wait to go get the new firmware installed.

There is a lot of difference between peoples results with the new FW. Is there a chance that sensors or circuitry was upgraded in production without a product announcement and that is the difference? I wonder if everyone could post their S/N's and whether a difference was made by the FW.

I would check whether your sharpening, contrast, saturation and colorspace are set exactly the same in the "new" shot as you did for the "pre-v2 firmware" shot (upgrading firmware resets *all* your previous custom settings). You stripped your attachments of their EXIF data, so I can't tell. But I'm pretty sure you didn't take both with the very same settings.
On my part, I've noticed an improvement in ISO 2500 JPEGs. I still have to examine the DNG files (I've shot them in DNG + JPEG fine mode)

F@rk, you're right. I wasn't experiencing this because I still had the firmware file in my card. I guess it parses the file to check if it's one you'd like to upgrade to, and that takes some time.
Once that file is gone, it's up in less than a second. That is a welcome improvement indeed.

I dont mean to doubt, the cat shot looks really great at 2500. But it was taken in good lighting condition. I shot 2500 indoor with poor lighting and the noise is much more apparent. Is it my sensor faulty?

Agreed. The real test is with poor lighting. I don't have an M8 so I can't answer the question.

I have the same observations as kingmillo. The noise is reduced from iso 640-2500 with this upgrade but there is still significant noise at 1250 and 2500.
I am now comfortable shooting routinely at iso 640 whereas I was only comfortable at 320 previously. But if would have to be pretty desperate to use 1250 or 2500.

I never get 2500 so clean on my M8. There is no other camera settings i have overlooked for shooting RAW, right? Mine is very noisy.

The shot of my cat was taken in decent enough light and you're right, a real test would be undertaken in tougher lighting conditions. I make no pretence at undertaking any kind of scientific test, just basing it on my prior experiences with the M8 before the firmware upgrade.
To me it looks like an improvement though maybe there is some difference between individual cameras I don't know.
I use Nikon gear for work and until the D3 came along hated having to hike the ISO up if I wasn't able to use flash as the Nikon gear really seemed to suffer from high noise levels at high ISO settings. However, even with the D3 I keep the ISO as low as I possibly can in each circumstance so as to reduce further the chance of increased noise. I accept that this will also be the case for me with my M8 but I'm pleased that it is improved upon what it was.

I use my M8 with Auto WB, set to DNG (RAW). All sharpening, contrast etc is set to standard. I don't tend to delve very deeply into the Menu system other than switching between DNG and JPEG (with Saturation set to b/w).....though this is very rare as I usually shot DNG and desaturate to b/w in Capture One.
From what I read of GabrielMA's posts he seems far more aware of the best use of settings and set-ups on the M8 than me, maybe he will know whether you're missing something or not.
I wonder if I have stumbled onto a lucky camera body or something😱
