Found this great new free Utility that takes the JPEG that's already embedded in the Raw file and almost instantly opens up the whole card so ending the need to shoot both for viewing editing purposes. It can even be used to re size them for E/mail etc.More to the point it works with RD-1 Raw files. Maybe M8 too.

Regards
Steve

Pardon me for being skeptical Steve. Are you associated with this company at all? Do you know what else the free utility provides? Thanks, Bob.

I have no relationship with the company whatsoever and am merely passing information for those who are interested.I have found it a very useful tool The people who have endorsed it are reputable. If you don't want or need this utility its your choice and of no importance to me.

Here's an article from Mike Johnstone (The Online Photographer) on IJFR. It looks pretty convenient, and being free I downloaded a copy for myself.

Pardon me for being skeptical, Bob. Are you associated with a company that competes with that other company? Do you know what other possibilities there may be for the above posting?

I have no connection with the company. I'm an academic, but do know Michael Tapes who is providing the free utility. All they are hoping to get out of it is your email which they promise not to sell. You do have the opportunity to opt out of future mailings. It is an admitted marketing ploy, but the utility is very useful. I downloaded it and plan to opt out of future mailings myself.

I use spamarrest, so even if I opt in they are screwed. And I have no commercial relationship with the company!

I've played with it too, with Pentax RAW files, and had a discussion with some other users. There seems to be wide variation with different camera makers RAW files, for example I'm told the Canon RAW files have only a very small JPEG embedded in the RAW file, while Pentax has full-size, middling-quality JPEGS embedded in both the PEF and DNG RAW files the K10D and K20D can save images to. Perhaps the Leica RAW files don't have an embedded RAW?

Nikon D200 extracted are 3872 x 2592 verse raw 3884 x 2600
so they are basically full size with Nikon
but remember these are really for sending out quick proofs/web images, if you are printing them you should be working with the raw files any way, thats why you shot in raw in the first place
so for what it is meant to do it does a very good quick job

Re. the M8: This was raised on Scott Kelby's blog, and Michael Tapes (IJFR developer) said

"A very quick look at the Leica M8…seems like there is a 320×240 JPEG lurking in there. Not very useful as a separate JPEG. I do not see any other image files other than the raw data. Maybe the camera has a setting to store a large preview into the DNG? Do you know? If not I can find out."
