I was shooting this afternoon and it seemed as if I still had half a charge left when the camera died. I thought the camera died until I thought about charging the battery again even though it was showing half a charge. After an hour, I placed the battery in the camera. Everything works, but the battery indicator displays a battery with little charge left in it. I remember when the camera was new, The battery would show more charge after an hour. I ordered a spare from B&H today to cover myself if this happens again.

I am just wondering if this battery has seen better days and it is at the end of its life. I have had the camera since April 2007.

sounds like a bum battery.
one of my laptops that I bought x-mas of '06 holds it's charge for a grand total of 35 seconds now. Batteries are the achilles heel of digital. You did the right thing ordering a new battery.

Yeh, I guess you need a few batteries with these things. Reminds me of my Pentax 645n and how I stock up on AA's. I guess when it is a Leica, we have a mindset of durability, and we forget that this thing is electronic. I have an M6 and an m4-2, and batteries were not an issue.

I ordered the Impact Lithium Ion. I thought $49 bucks was not that bad, and felt safe that this was a product that B&H recommends as a replacement battery.

I bought a third party battery from one of the better NY sources via internet.
While on vacation in Alaska, I recharged it when it was about 3/4 down and then after recharge it still read only 1/4 full. I assumed it had gone bad after I then recharged it repeatedly and got the same 1/4 charge icon in the M8.
I then read on the Leica website that some third party batteries don't charge as well due to an inferior circuit as compared to the standard Leica battery.

Well, I have good news. As an experiment, it put it back in the camera, left it on for more than 24 hours until I was sure it was flat and then recharged it. Voila! It reads full charge.

Apparently, some third party batteries need to go below 1/4 charge or less to accept a full charge in the Leica charger. I thought I would share this experience with the forum in the event that others have had a similar problem.
