Please let me know your honest opinion of this shot. Does it do anything for you? I can't decide if I like it because it's good or just because I took it...if you know what I mean.

Thanks,
Paul

Paul - let me preface my response by stating: 1) the fact that YOU like it should be all that matters (unless you're selling the image) -- no need to justify it; and, 2) whether or not I like it shouldn't matter (unless I'm buying the image). ;)

To be honest, it doesn't work for me. IMHO, while the central part of the image (the couple) does work to a certain degree, it is "absrobed" by the busy background. The column behind the woman is distracting, as is the bad bokeh (no flames please) exhibited by the sharp edges betwen the man's and the woman's faces, and that globe to the right.

It just seems like a confusing sea of gray, and my "mind's eye" cannot lock on to something. Busy backgrounds are tough to deal with, which is why people prize fast lenses that exhibit good b*k*h.

Just my $0.02 (which is depreciating with each passing day).

It's framed a little too tightly for my taste, and I'm not wild about pictures of people talking on the phone. But I really like the expression on the guy's face and his body language.

I didn't actually get at first that she was on the phone. It is an interesting shot in that I am left wondering what's going on with these people. It almost seems like he's flirting with her but she's not interested. On the other hand, they're both touching themselves, and isn't that some kind of sign of sexual interest? Her expression belies that notion, though....

Doesn't work for me, due to awkward poses (head tilts, and their hands) and distracting background.

It looks fine from a technical standpoint.
I don't like pictures of people on the phone, but that's just me. People spend too much time on their cell phones anyhoot.

There's an interesting, low-level tension here for me, but it's one of those maddening photos that neither entirely succeeds or fails. If it totally failed, I wouldn't bother commenting...that's how I am (blame it on my mother's old saying of "If you can't say anything nice..."). Perhaps it's a parable for the times, all of us with our Weapons of Mass Distraction in our pockets and bags. We can now be in so many places at once, which is both a marvel and a curse.

Were the two people interacting, or was the man just walking by when you took the shot.

In general, I think pictures are better if they're an accurate portrayal of a situation.

Thank you all for the honest comments. It's very helpful.

I've been bouncing back and forth between liking this one and being uncomfortable with it. I guess that's because it's not working.

I never even noticed that she appears to be on the phone, but I'm pretty sure she was not. I think she was talking to him and he was leaning in to listen. I didn't get any sense of anyone being in trouble or being upset at the time but their hands and her eye contact make it seem kind of awkward. I think it's not working because it's a little misleading.

Thanks,
Paul
