Hello all, I was wondering if any of you know of a changeable rangefinder with 35mm lines that is made? I've heard of people putting M2 rangefinders on M3s etc.

I have always been told that the M3 is the only one that can't be changed. All others can be swapped around or upgraded to MP standard.

I had a "Franken-Leica" M3 SS /w M2 viewfinder. No idea who or why it was changed but the camera worked very well.

The rangefinder, I mean. I was thinking about that too, I kinda like the 50mm framelines but I've got a 35mm lens with the eyes. A bit heavy sometimes.

"Some dedicated Leica nuts are just sure their Leica will be better if it has another finder in it. Upgrading the M2 finder to the .72 M6 finder is easy. I have also heard of some people paying the extra dough to have a M4 finder in the M3. It can be done, but it's a custom job and expensive. Likewise a M3 can be put in a M4 if you are willing to pay the bill, but this makes little sense today with the .85 M6 being easily available. "

Best VF upgrade paths for the M3 under these circumstances:
1. If VF magnificataion matters, get an M6 .85x
2. If VF magnification doesn't matter, get an M2 or M4

I use one of the very small 28/35 Voigtlander auxiliary minifinders on my M3 with a 35mm lens (without eyes of course )and it's a good combo for me. I got the M3 mostly to use a 50mm summilux (the 0.91x finder is brilliant for this), but this combo easily allows me to use any 35mm lens as well.
