Not sure how better to post these. All with my GR-D, untweaked. Saw an M8 there with one of the new CV lenses. Unbelievable speech in person. Well worth the price of admission (free thanks to my wife!).

Obama - what zone?

I stayed up late here in Tipperary, Ireland to watch the results come in. The BBC (via satellite beamed to Ireland) showed several black-and-whte photographs of Barak as part of their graphics and he really suited the look of monochrome, I thought. Which got me thinking ...

Had I been asked to take a B&W portrait of previous US presidents (which I haven't) I would have used my M2 with hp5+ and a Summitar (and perhaps Culminar 85), setting the subject's skin-tone to zone VI by using the 'C' setting on my Weston Master V. Were I to be asked to photograph President Obama (unlikely) what would be the correct zone?

Mary: these were done with the GR-D I. I made the mistake of taking only my 1GB card last night so I ran out of space about 7/8 through.

r_g: Sorry we missed each other. We were in the outer area, did not get there early enough. It was a very polite crowd during and after, best I've ever seen. I saw some really crazy things in NYC when I lived there and was expecting somewhat of a Times Square on New Years Eve when we left the secure area but everyone walked by was wonderful.

Once we were in, movement was pretty impossible. Next time, I'll make sure I'm standing near the important peeps from the get go. 😉

lol, posting photos is not political my friend. Regardless of what the original poster's preference in the election was, the photos are of a historical event, which is relevant to photography IMO.

In the front area where we were, it was much as I had guessed. Huge floods down on the crowd so it would read in the TV cams. The 50mm I pretty much left on f2, 1/30th at 320, and the 21 I had wide open at f4 1/15th - only adjusting if I was shooting away from the lights. A 2.8 21mm would have been nice, but the added depth of field worked to my advantage in this case anyway.

Focal lengths I think worked well for the area we were in. A longer lens might have been nice on occasion - but sightlines were not such that I could have done much about what was up on stage anyway - so being limited to the crowd, this worked well.

If I'd taken a second body, or a bag, a fast 35 might have been nice, but I'm pretty happy with what I had. I rarely bothered with the XA in my pocket.

Shot UC400 at 320, and BW400CN at 320. A bit underexposed at times, but useable. The XA had Fuji 800 press in it, but I never finished that roll - I only took maybe a dozen shots with that guy. A second P would definitely have been a better choice if I'd know how little they would bother me.

Did anyone see the photographer who was down in front with the film SLR? It was a really brief segment as Pres Elect Obama and VP Elect Biden were waving right after the speech, but the guy photographing wound his film. That was sort of exciting...
