Yes, I know this forum is for "Evil SLR's", and that the Panasonic Lumix G1 is not an SLR, per se (but it is "single lens".) However, folks have taken to calling it an "EVIL" (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens) camera, so here's a set of images I shot today. Moderator, feel free to move this thread if it's posted to the wrong forum.

ISO200, in-camera JPEG mode, minimal PP (a bit of color and contrast tweak,) 14-45mm kit lens. Shot in the "student ghetto" south of UNM, in Albuquerque.

I'm looking forward to the continued advancement of this micro four-thirds genre of camera. Thanks for showing some pics. It appears to be doing a great job. Show us some low-light stuff when you get some; I'd like to see how it handles interiors and ends-of-the-day.

I must say that when I first saw your images, my gut response was "they've been cropped". It took me a second to remember that this its not named four-thirds for nothing! It'll be interesting to see how others take to these dimensions; my eyeball is clearly still thinking 3/2 is the proper rectangle. Ahhh... there's nothing like a bit of change in our lives. 🙂

You can set the camera up to shoot 3:2 format. It's a menu option.

I like the concept, and the images look great. How's the VF? I am looking for a small-D-SLR, but have been dissapointed by the VF on the Oly 420--it's tiny, almost too tiny. I was looking at the Panasonic DMC-L1 or the Leica Digilux 3 (the clone), or the G1--As I could use the Leica OIS 14-50. But are the VF's any better than the e-420's?

I've been spoiled by Nikon F series & Leica M VF's...
 
The viewfinder is an electronic viewfinder (EVF). Larger than the smaller DSLRs, but not a substitute for a pro body. On the other hand, this is clearly the best EVF out there: quite smooth, it covers 100% of the frame, and it increases brightness (and some noise) automatically when the scene being shot is dim (so shooting stopped down or in low light is much easier).

Also, there is a full tilt and swivel viewer on the back, which makes many candids much easier.

The camera has 'film modes' built in, with a dedicated button, but I much prefer to post-process for BW or colour. I am currently experimenting with some Lightroom presets from Michael Gray http://lifeindigitalfilm.blogspot.com/ which seem quite good (especially the latest BW presets).

I was under the impression that the G1 has a choice of aspect ratios...????

I just checked on on the the review sites, and the aspect ratios supported are 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9... all using the 4000 pixel width with changing height pixels to achieve the ratios.

Nice shots, it's cool to see some people starting to use that camera. Looking forward to seeing what people get once the M mount adapters are available and people can use M lenses.

Did you get it from a store in Albuquerque? I'm going to be there in a couple days and wouldn't mind playing around with one of those cameras if any of the stores still have any.

When I tried one it was much better than I expected - still not a piece of glass and no where near either a ZI or my slrs, but much much better than I expected (way ahead of the old pana FZ20)

Thanks for the comments.

The viewfinder has high enough resolution that I can't see pixels at all. It was adapted from a Panasonic professional HD camcorder, probably the best video viewfinder currently in production.

It also has a great diopter adjustment; enough such that I can adjust the diopter so I can clearly see the viewfinder with my distance prescription while wearing bifocals.

I bought this camera from Panasonic Direct; I know of no stores that yet carry the G1 in Albuquerque.

I like shooting in the 4:3 aspect ratio mode because it uses all the pixels of the sensor; I can crop in PP later, if I choose to. From the manual: 4:3 mode: 4000x3000; 3:2 mode: 4000x2672; 16:9 mode: 4000x2248 pixels.
