Seems everyone is worried about keeping too much stock for the next year or two.

And 3 offers... So obviously there are at least some folks who think that $450 is too much for that camera. Interesting...

Time for me to introduce myself and start posting here. I was the successful bidder for the S3. I didn't think it would hang around long so I offered the full $450 asking price, but I didn't use Buy It Now as I need to check first that the seller would ship it to the UK for me. Now, all I have to do is sit back and wait for it to arrive...
I got into Nikon SLRs back in 1975 (Nikkormat FTn + 50mm f2) and have loved and used them ever since. I've always hankered after a rangefinder, having had most of the SLRs, but it wasn't until last month that I started the ball rolling when I got an S2 and 50mm f2. I've put a couple of films through it so far, and I'm finding it fun to use compared to my digital stuff.
Like many of you I suffer from gear acquisition syndrome and I was thinking that maybe an SP or S3 would be nice to go along with the S2, when along comes this S3.
Of course, I need a few lenses to go with it now.

Hi James, and congratulations, I'm very envious and wish I had seen it. Coincidentally I bought an SP here in Brisbane for AU$450 eight years ago and I still regard that as my luckiest find. It did come with a case and 2/50 Nikkor, but it was covered in dirt and had some(easily repairable) damage to the frame selector mechanism. It is now one of my favorite users and the f2 lens is brilliant.
A year earlier I had seen an SP at Grays of Westminster for 1500 pounds or
about AU$3750 and I had decided that this was one camera I would never own! Suddenly an S3 seems a distinct possibility.
If the beam splitter in the glass viewfinder block is the cause of the dim rangefinder spot, then Luton Photographics might be able to help with
re-silvering.

G'day Charles and Oftheherd, and thanks for the welcome.
I was going to ask about dim rangefinders and what can be done about them. I think I've come across Luton Photographics in the past so will bear that in mind. I'll see what it's like when I get it, and decide whether it's usable first, I suppose.
I visit Grays from time to time to have a look at some of the great stuff there especially in their Nippon Kogaku room. Wonderful place , but it's not cheap is it.

Hi James, I run a tiny repair business mainly servicing screw Leicas and their copies, and a customer brought this seized up M3 to me with a bung rangefinder. I got the camera working but couldn't improve the rangefinder second image, so he sent the entire camera to Luton. They dismantled the camera, boiled the glass viewfinder block until it seperated, re-silvered the beam splitter and assembled and posted the camera all for AU$400, which would be considerably less in GBP terms.

I've used an old S3 and the Mllenium version, and I found the rangefinder looked dim on both since the viewfinder is so bright. If you dim the viewfinder slightly with something over the front (cleared film, etc.) the patch becomes bright. Congrats on the S3!
