scanning and sharpness

Yesterday I scanned a negative with Vuescan by trying out the "own profiling"-method (setting the filmbase color).

The result came out quite unsharp and sharpening did not do anything at all, at least to my eye.
The scanner's own software does a for myself "better" job to create a sharper image. With a big "but": While I can scan the black border around the photo on the negative in Vuescan, the Epson V500's software can not do this and maybe the photo has a bit more artefacts.

How do you do it with Vuescan, using an Epson V scanner? It seems I don't get it right.

Okay, let me explain what I want to do:

a) being able to get the black negative borders into the scan with the Epson software (is that possible after all?)

and/or

b) better sharpening with Vuescan (since there I can include the black borders most of the time).

Any hints/comments/help, please? :angel:🙂

i use the v700 not the v500, but i CAN select a bigger-than-the-frame area and include the black borders. I regularly do it.
I use the thumbnail view prescan, i set the "prescan area size" or something like that in the Preferences to "large" and I can select 1-2 extra millimeters off the real frame size.

To get the black borders with the Epson software: click on the Configuration button, click on the Preview button and set the Auto Photo Orientation to large! That should do it!

I find both of those to be easier and much more controllable to do in your image editor (i.e. Photoshop) than in the scan step. And, you can undo them in most image editors but once it is done in the scan file, it cannot be reversed.
