Ultron at the road-side

The CV Ultron 35/1.7 I bought from another RFF member finally reached me a couple of days back. Looks unused, though I shall ask for an 11-cent refund for the scratch on the cap. I blasted off a roll of Fujicolor 100 in my M2 to test its performance at apertures from wide open to f/8. There were two or three boring table-top frames, but the rest were real life ones. Here are three people who ply their trades on pavements in the neighbourhood: a cobbler, a tailor and a barber. The 6" by 4" prints are satisfyingly sharp, and out-of-focus areas are pleasing. I do not think that my scans do the photographs justice. Comments and criticism welcome.

These are nice, Mukul. I like the tailor best, but would probably crop it a bit from right and below.

The streets in my home town are not nearly as interesting! Nice shots. I like the atmosphere in them.

You're right about the cropping, Roland. I should have aimed the camera a little to the left. I've always had this problem of not re-composing after I've focussed. The result, specially when I'm working fast, is that the centre of interest is literally in the centre of the frame.

It's the Other Pasture Syndrome, Frank. I'm willing to bet that I'll find many interesting things in the streets of your town.

That's right. I've lived in Bisbee for 30 years and constantly lament that there's nothing here to photograph, yet tourists come in droves and clog the streets taking pictures. I'll bet if Frank and I could change places for a week we'd have great fun photographing, and then when we shared pictures I'd look at some of his Bisbee images (and believe me, I've photographed Bisbee ad nauseum) and I'd say, "God, why didn't I take that picture! It's been right in front of me all along." And perhaps he'd look at some of my shots of (is it Edmonton?) and have the same reaction.

Of course we'd both go nuts in Delhi.

Nice job. I strongly considered that lens when looking at getting my first 35mm.

We should set up a RFF exchange program. One week sleeping on my couch and shooting my city, I get a week on yours 😀

Thank you, Will and nobbylon. I started out with B&W at the beginning of the 1960s, Will, and still tend to "see" that way -- but proper silver based work has become rare and requires me to ride my motor scooter over long distances through lousy traffic. I did try B&W chromogenic once, but decided that colour neg was the way to go: colour if that is what is wanted, and converting to monochrome is easy. Which lens did you finally get, capitalK? If you want to spend a week shooting Delhi, you can count on a bed. You'll need to pay, mind, by listening to an old fellow's interminable ramblings.

You'll need to sign an undertaking not to lean this way and that or wag your, er, tail. In days past, when I rode largeish motorbikes, shaky pillion riders were not so much of a problem.

I also have the 35mm Ultron mounted on an R2a and really love how it draws an image. What film were you shooting? I liked the barber and tailor shots. I like the way the colors pop on the muted backgrounds.

Plain Fujicolor 100, Brian. No increase in saturation, by the way: in fact, usually I reduce it a little.

Nice shots, Mukul. This is a great lens.
I was in Delhi last month but had my hands full having to watch over my three year old daughter who was visiting her grandpa for the first time. I didn't get a chance to go out and take photos.

I too got a Ultron recently with my "new" M2 but I used the DR Summicron on the first roll. Ultron is being used on the current roll. Let's see if we get results as nice as yours.

I got the same lens with my Epson R-D1 less then a week ago. I've not done anything serious with it yet (just snapshots in and around the house). I'm waiting for better weather to take it into town.
