I prefer shooting with a 35mm most of the time, lately I've been a bit obsessed with finding a great compact and fast lens to add to my stable. I own several leica 35s including a version 3 summicron that I find adequetly small. I often find myself wanting for even shallower dof or the ability to shoot 200 asa just one speed faster.

So I would like some opinions. What are some of your favorite fast 35s? I've never used the summilux pre-asph or the canon 1.5, so it would be good to hear about those. I know the voigtlanders are popular, a bit wary or focus shift talk with the new 1.4 nokton. Should I consider the 40? Does it have a similar issue? I will be shooting mostly film, but I do have an r-d1. I like the voigt 1.2 a lot but for this purpose it is just too big. Also how much smaller is the 40mm summicron than my ver. 3? I want a leave on my camera lens for my 0.58x. I like the build quality of leica lenses but I'm not a purest about it.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts,

Decide between the 40/1.4 and the 35/1.4 depending on budget, FL, and the slightly different characteristics of the lenses. The 35 has bit of barrel distortion and perhaps slightly nicer bokeh wide open; the 40 has no distortion but perhaps a little vignetting and can be had for less than half the price of a 35. Roland (ferider) just did an interesting comparison of three fast 35s so check that thread out. the CV 1.2 is stunning but big :bang: Sounds like you should get the CV 35/1.4 .

I may have to try the CV 35 1.4, it's to bad it didn't get the same reverence as the 1.2 right off the bat. I was kind of hoping it would.

35 Nokton is small. And the distortion people are talking may not be noticeable unless you compare with other lens...

I tried recently selling some 35s and got no takers. Will have to repost some of my gear in the classifieds unless someone has some trading fodder.

I missed the Konica that was on here recently, mainly due to trading being my main currency lately.

I know there are other threads about this currently so I wont beat a dead horse, as I got a lot of good info from those. Mainlythat I should try a VC 35 1.4, perhaps I'll try a SC version.

I have the cron ASPH and the canon 1.5. I compared both to the canon 1.8 resolution wise.
The best one is obviously the summicron.
The surprise is that the 1.5 was better than the 1.8. It is visibly less clear than the cron, but not by a huge amount. the clarity doesnt really improve with stopping down.
My main issue with the canons is their minimum focusing distance at 1m.
