Newbie to folders...

@chippy: I thought about not telling you guys the link, but seeing the support I'm getting, I figure I can trust you guys enough to let me win ;) I'll know if I win tomorrow, then wait about 2 weeks to see what i got myself into! Either I get to shoot right away, or I get to learn how to repair folders myself! wither way, I guess it's gonna be a heckuva ride! :)

@fallisphoto: thanks! If I do win and it needs some working on, I'll be sure to get advice from you!

@Krosya: Wow! What detail on the river?/lake?/pond? bed! Nice shot! Can't wait'll I get mine (hopefully)!

Just for future reference: Every single time I have mentioned a camera I was buying, on any forum, someone has sniped it out from under me at the last second. It has happened enough times that I can't help but think that there is a cause and effect relationship. My advice would be to talk about it on the forums after you win it. Otherwise, by posting something about it, you are just showing a whole bunch of rabid, drooling, camera fanatics (all with acute gear aquisition syndrome), where there's a good deal to be had on a helpless camera.

On hindsight, you're right... crap. I hope I get lucky and no devious soul will pull the rug out from under me! :(

FallisPhoto is right, it really does happen, you dont have to worry about us---it'al be some unknown with GAS that pinches it...even though another will be along soon, and then another and another, no shortage of them.

if i was you i would delete that post --or edit your post to somehting else...Charles will more than likely be happy to edit his with the details out as well

Edited! Hope the snipers didn't get to read the post before I deleted it... I also raised my maximum bid just in case...

The problem isn't with most established members here, or even most of the newer ones. It is the lurkers. I really think there are many who lurk on all forums just looking for bargains mentioned by members. They then scurry off to try and buy what they expect to be a good bargain because an established member has mentioned it in a favorable light.

I first noticed it on another forum. I bought a great camera for about $15 because the seller wasn't familiar with it. I then talked about it and its relationship to another camera. You wouldn't believe how fast the price climbed on all other models of that camera for about 3 months. Sheesh, I should have demanded finders fees from all those sellers. :D

Point is, be careful. Personally, I never post about a camera to a forum. I may mention it to friends, but not as a public posting. That is an invitation to a lot of not so honest thinking people. As I said, mostly lurkers.

EDIT: BTW, if it is even in halfway good shape, you should love the Welta. I have a couple and love them. There are some others here at RFF that like them as well.

Uh, ... actually, about half the people here know how to do them. Mostly, they are the half that wouldn't send anything to JK even on a bet. http://rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26972&highlight=certo Frankly, I have come to the conclusion that he is rude, slipshod, is less than honest and has poor taste.

Missed this post... what I meant by "here" was in the Philippines... no offense to those who restore old cams here...

I've yet to see a photog here in the Philippines with a folder. Mostly DSLR's, SLR's, the occasional TLR and MF cameras... but no rangfinder folders... hence my doubts of a good restorer of folders this side of the world...

Thanks for the heads up... I don't really use ebay much so I'm not familiar of the ins and outs...

I also read around here about the Weltax, so I jumped the gun on it! Not one negative (far as I know) comment about it. Unlike my previous choices (Ikonta with its film spacing I think...and Solida with mixed opinions.)

thinkfloyd, the folks in this sub-forum is some of the most knowledgeable and nicest people. I learned a great deal about folders mainly here.

And you'd better get ready with the kind of details that Krosya's beautiful picture shows, the 120 format and a good folder in a good working condition produces stunning pictures.

I've had that happen a lot. In fact, the prices on Weltas used to be a lot lower before a few of us started talking them up here. I wouldn't be too sure about the actual people you talk to either. Most people have at least a bare modicum of manners, but I have had people on other forums snatch cameras out from under me two minutes after I mentioned it to them in a private message (relax Chippy, I'm not talking about you).

LOL, i know your not, and there has been one or two you were after, that i would i have liked, but i would be the first to know if i sniped a camera from ya ;)

its inevitable isnt it, and one of the major drawbacks to discussing some of these cameras (if your in the market to buy), that the prices seem to increase, i nearly fell over the first few times i saw JK put a large reserve on that model welta, and they still sold ....but with a little bit of patience they can be picked up for bargin prices and good to go, which is what makes them more appealing of course...and one reason that other seller starts his camera with a starting price now...on some occassions before if he started them low, they would be sold for a mere few dollars.

stunning bright picture, the car looks great, those little 'eye lashes' over the headlights are coooool, funny little red cherry on top of them too!

those ND filters are invaluable hey, (for people that dont know) for getting the shutter speed down (or within its limits-no 1-2000th speed on a folder), or wider f stop or a combination of both.

Did a check again today, I'm still the only bidder... hope it lasts. 19 hours to go! :)

@shadowfox: What ND filter did you use? I'm thinking of getting an ND8 or somthing, since I love shooting wide open (or close to it) and the 1/250 shutter limit of the Weltax won't cut it in daylight conditions... Lovely shot! Detail is amazing! Can't wait to have my own folder now! (fingers crossed)

hehe its exciting hey, 19 hours on ebay is an eternity...hope you get it for a good price, maybe no one else will bother....for instance, the first perkeo 1 i mentioned in an earlier post, from Australia with c/scopar, s/compur, box, instructions and e/case sold for under $100US, and so did the other perkeo 2 with c/scopar and s/compur that was said to be good

I hate to say this, but if you are bidding in an open auction it is open for everyone... that's the way it is supposed to work. If you are the seller you don't want to hear that the main bidders are forbidding their friends from bidding for the item to sell artificially low (I don't even think that is ethical)... and I hate to say it as well, but when someone snipes you, they pay more than you were willing to pay so they deserve the win... obviously, when it is me I'm annoyed that I didn't get the sure deal... but it's an open market and I could have bid higher.

Certainly when people talk about lesser known cameras and people become interested prices go up... nothing remarkable there. Check your bid histories, many of the bids are between 2-4 people... it doesn't take much to drive up prices in that situation.

So haven't any of the complainers ever sold items on ebay????

When you are looking for incredible deals you go to garage sales, if you are looking for paying a fair price and immediate purchase go to ebay.

the perkeos are pretty cameras... I don't like that they put the VF off to the side to maximize parallax...

PS 6x9's are nicer IMO, because they are almost the same size, but the negatives are so much larger... and heehee 6:9.

What's PS? Anyway, I guess you're right. A sniper who bids a dollar more than me at the last minute deserves to win I guess... I shouldv'e bet more... here's hoping I win the bid! 9 hours to go!

Congrats on winning the camera. I was going to bid, but then I saw your post. Guess I'll wait for the next Weltax. Cupog is a good seller to deal with--just wish his shipping fees didn't have to be so expensive. Let us know how you enjoy the camera.

Joe
