PaRodinal Formula

You could PM ZorkiKat on this forum. He uses Parodinal extensively and may have some useful Do's and Don'ts. I think he uses it for most, if not all of his B/W work.

Zorkikat's PaRodinal is legendary here in the Philippines and his formula is top secret except for the additive derived from cats ;p

Get in touch with David A. Goldfarb. Here or APUG or Large Format Photography Forum. David uses paRodinal. Here is what he had to say at APUG:

Or you could make paRodinal for about 1/3 the cost of Rodinal. Call it heresy, but I actually prefer it as a developer--a lot like Rodinal with a bit of the edge burnished off, kind of like Rodinal + sulfite.

I saw ZorkiKat's post on APUG about using powdered acetaminophen instead of tablets--the brew is a gorgeous light pink colour.

I've asked my local Shoppers Drug Mart (Canadian pharmacy chain) if they could order me some ingredients and they said it wouldn't be an issue so I'm pretty excited to get started!

I got this Tri-X @ ISO3200:

with 1/20th of this in 500ml water:

10g Tylenol (20 tabs)
9g Sodium Metabisulfite (wine bottle cleaner at wine store)
15g Sodium Hydroxide (Lye from craft soap maker shop)
water to make 100ml

(why not Sodium Sulfite? Easier for me to get Metabisulfite. With Sodium Hydroxide in water it makes S.Sulfite, with a byproduct of some water, so some of the Sodium Hydroxide is used to make S.Sulfite, the rest is for the PaRodinal formula).

Water 250 ml
Acetaminophen 30x 500mg tablets
Sodium Sulfite (anhydrous) 50 g
Sodium Hydroxide (anhydrous) 20 g

This was the formula that I used but instead of the tablets I used powdered Acetaminophen.

I did two batches the first one the sulfite was dissolved in half of the required water in room temp and the acetaminophen and hydroxide in hot water (note to self: do not add hydroxide in hot water in a narrow container all at the same time. Turns out to be a "BLAST" :bang:) . Both solutions were mixed after the aceta+hydro solution cooled off. The product has a tea color and stayed consistent after 58 hours.

The second batch was mixed in room temp water and it turned out pinkish. It is now 36 hours old and color is still the same.

Will continue to monitor results and will test the batches out after 76 hours.

Cant wait to see some photos from film developed in this wonderful brew. By all accounts, it behaves like the original product and keeps just as well. Post some pics as soon as you have some !!!

Could you take pictures from this point on? I'm curious to see how it looks.

Pardon the image. I dont have a digital camera. All Analog ;p

The original batches were placed inside glass amber bottles.

I feel embarrassed (since I am a heavy Rodinal user), but I had never heard of parodinal. What are the (purported) advantages over Rodinal, and the differences with respect to images developed with it?

"What are the (purported) advantages over Rodinal"

!) It will always be available.

2) It is cheap.

3) It does exactly the same thing as Rodinal and just as well, IMO and others.

Thanks. I bought a lot of Rodinal before Agfa went under. Commercially bottled Rodinal is cheap as it is. Since the formulae are probably not the same, I would be surprised if does exactly the same thing, but I could be wrong. :D

With the quantity of Rodinal I have stocked up, I think I'm good to go. ;)

Nothing PURPORTED in all of the above. All proven. :)

I've done split roll tests (half in Rodinal, half in paRodinal of the same roll) and both halves show equivalent results. If there's any, it's not perceptible. And if its not perceptible, would it be relevant?

The important Rodinal qualities are there: sharpness and crisp grain. Compensation at higher dilutions.

And one more: longevity. Digital truth says that it only lasts 3 months.
The first batch I made (and still keep for reference) in October 2006 is dark as mud but still OK. A part of the 'pink brew' I described at APUG still exists, albeit no longer pink, but darker but not murky, still works.

The only time I've seen paRodinal "die" is with a 15ml residual left in a 500ml bottle. It was black as ink.

And paRodinal is a boost in places where I and Ian come from. There hasn't been a Rodinal bottle seen in any store shelf here since the 1960s.
