Religious Experience... TRI-X

Ruben: you and I are thinking the same here. But then I am one of those that believes the world already has too many technically excellent but absolutely boring photos already.

True.

And the world already has too may photogs looking for big money runing at art galleries too.

Cheers,
Ruben

These were scanned on my Epson 4180 scanner... not ideal considering I have access to a Nikon 4000ED. I will repost once I have acceptable scans.

Dear Friend,

Have you been talking in general, I would agree very much with you. No doubt.

But the photog opening this thread specifically said:

"Maybe not quite a religious experience, but I certainly am excited to finish the last 3 rolls. Yesterday I picked up some Rodinal and HC-110 to further my test.

Comments and criticism not only welcome, but encouraged. Tips on using and developing TRI-X are also welcome".

Had he asked for aesthetical commentary I would strongly back his work.

Although in general too, asking for aesthetical commentary via techincal issues is not the taster choice.

Yet it is true, and must be said on his behalf, that our friend capitalK, posted his technical or aesthetics post with several appealing aesthetical images, within the Critique forum, instead of the "film" forum.

Cheers
Ruben

It's all good. He did ask for critique, and you did give it. :)

But c'mon, you can see a lot in what's been posted. Not grain structure, but even a poor scan shows tonal range and smoothness. We can assume detail is lost. That doesn't mean we can't see anything.

FWIW, I love Tri-X. I also like Pan F, HP5, Plus-X, Kodak Gold 100, etc. If I wanted to show you why I loved those films, I would show you an entire image, not a blow-up of a corner.

I'm hurt that you didn't critique my contribution [:tear:] lol

Ruben was pissed with me for getting his Julies Caesar thread locked so he took out his anger on this thread.

The funny thing was to see Ruben with his intellectual pretentious suddenly being so vicious.

Dear Nh3,

Kindly excuss me for having answered your posts this time. I have abstained from for a long time and I promise I will continue (to abstain)

Cheers,
Ruben

Hi 40oz,

I did take special note of your post and found it of special interest for your diverging approach. I intended to contact you about it via email, as you like me presented aproaches about "how to drive at the RFF avenue" from which I may honestly learn.
Unfortunately till now I did not find the time. Perhaps this week end.

Cheers,
Ruben

There is nothing wrong for any moderator to lock a thread that went to the wrong direction. This is their authority which I do respect. Otherwise our forum couldn't exist. The day RFF will end, many folks that are not aware now will feel then its tremendous value.

Mods work hard and it is not to be expected they will be at their best mood for each of us all the time. Thus when I get what I perceive to be an angry message about a thread that should be closed or redirected, it is my policy to smooth, and let the mod to proceed. Mods should get help and for this end I opened a discussion about a different redirection of posts at the Russian subforum.

And after all none of us is writing any sacred psalm (well, some artistic exception lately). A thread once opened, as a matter of fact for good or for bad, is not any more the property of its first poster.

Of course, this has nothing to do with self censorship. The mods themselves have repeated it time and again. It is not about what is said but how.

Cheers,
Ruben

yaaaaaaaaaaawn. Anyone still bickering, read the OP and then ask yourself why.

PS I like the original shots. The look is working for you, however you achieved it.

you are not alone bob

Tri-X is my film choice; I shall not want.
It maketh me to create perfect exposures.
It leadeth me beside the D76 and Rapid Fix.
It restoreth my highlights:
It leadeth me in the paths of push-processing for Art's sake.

Yea, though I expose through the filter of red,
I will fear no loss of accutance: For thy developer art diluted 1+1;
Thy grain and thy yellow box, they comfort me.
Thou preparest a room for me in the darkness of mine house;
Thou annointest my reel with developer, my tank runneth over.

Surely sharpness and good contrast shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the House of Eastman forever.

>> And I shall wet print you, for thy home is the enlarger

Brother,

Bow your head, place your VISA card to monitor and give thanks with me to the brethern at Freestyle. Dig deep and order plenty that their good work may continue....

Can I get an AMEN????????

Best regards,

Bob

I have to agree about Freestyle, just be very happy that they are around. Even if you are digital, you know down deep you would like to shoot a roll sometime, and Freestyle will hopefully be there for you. Does this bailout include Freestyle? It should.

D76 is the classic "soap" and somehow it gives acceptable results with all the films. Rodinal on the other hand is a far more mysterious and enigmatic developer and in IMO the best developer for Trix...
^
Rodinal has been around for AGES and is quite well known. It's not enigmatic and mysterious.

Tips on 400TX?

800 and below: D-76 1+1.
1600 and above: XTOL 1+1.

400TX + D-76 are joined at the hip. I find it's sweet spot EI is 200-250.
