Does anyone know if Leica lenses with goggles will work on an Epson R-D1? I don't think they will.

I also have an M4 as well as an R-D1 and can't wait to put the Elmarit 135 to work.
Love to try it on my R-D1 but I know it won't work. I still want it to on the Epson!

Okay, I got the 135mm 2.8 Elmarit in yesterday. The goggles were trashed beyond repair or an easy cleaning and no the goggles wouldn't work on an Epson R-D1. So I thought why the heck do I need these damn goggles. Off with their goggles.
The lens came out great and now works great on my R-D1, as long as I'm not trying to focus an image within 50 feet. Rangefinder isn't wide enough to accurately focus a 135mm lens.
Here's some pics.
Notice in the second pic I had to build a brace to lock the 135mm lens in place. The R-D1 has a whimpy lens mount lock and it needed some help holding the lens in the lockedposition. I know we're not supposed to do this kind of stuff but hey, it works great!

I don't see how goggles could work, because the rangefinder/viewfinder windows are in different physical locations.

ooh, Rally -- gorgeous!
as for a 135 on the Epson, i have an ancient Hektor and it's a hoot to use. possible (if difficult) to get sharp images at all distances.

the goggles are only made for Leica M bodies.... discrimination, i tell ya!

The width (or actually called the base) of the R-D1 rangefinder is not wide enough to focus a less this long. The rangefinder on the Leica M bodies is much wider, so it can accuratly focus the lens.
It's kind of like your eyes were made too close together to focus properly.

Shouldn't work as the RF base is to small to focus correctly.

The goggles on lenses like 35mm Summarons, Summicrons, 50mm DR Summicrons and the 135mm mentioned won't work because the RF base-length is physically about 20mm wider on an M vs the R-D1. That said, I'm wondering if anyone can mount their DR Summicron on an R-D1 and get infinity focus. I know M8 owners sometimes choose to hack the close-focus cam surface off of their DR lens to mount it to the M8 and be able to focus to infinity. Does this problem exist with the R-D1? I'm not an R-D1 owner yet, but should be soon (crosses fingers and toes). The close-up ability is the reason I got the DR Summicron at first but now I love the lens for more than its utility at closer distances than the M RF can handle. So if it could be mounted and still have infinity focus, I could still accurately take a photo but I'd just have to look at the screen after exposure. the DR would still be a great lens for tripod use and closeups of things in nature.

The goggles don't only adapt the view through the viewfinder, the goggled lenses have a different cam build. The rangefinder cam is also adapted to the different view through the goggles.
So a goggled lens can't be properly used without goggles. At infinity everything is sharp, so the closer the focus, the bigger the difference.
With the DR, things are a little different. The DR has a Dual Range cam. The rangefinder cam in most lenses is a tube. In the DR it is also a tube, but one half of the diameter sticks deeper into the body. The DR glasses are only mounted when the close focus bit of the cam is used.
Longer focus lenses can be used on the R-D1, but focussing and framing becomes increasingly difficult. I can't wait on getting mine back from Steve and try the 200mm Komura...

I have adjusted the cam on the ex-goggled 135mm f:2.8 lens and it is focusing much, much better.
Still the rangefinder on the Epson R-D1 does not have a wide enough base to properly focus a 135mm lens. You have to stop down to be totally accurate.
