Hi all,
Just got a used r-d1s (#100944) but there seems to be a problem. Might sound a little silly but on AE mode, the camera seems to be overexposing by at least 2 EV stops. :bang: Only when I put it on -2 EV, does it expose correctly. I'm using the Nokton 35mm 1.4 SC on it currently.
Is this a common problem? How can I solve it? Thanks for any aid rendered!

Do you meter on bright or dark areas?...on AE mode, the camera seems to be overexposing by at least 2 EV stops...

bright
bright
a typical scene of a white wall. I just used AE off the center of the frame. the normal looking one is with -2 EV.
Thanks for all the help!

Better meter on brighter areas like you did with trannies if you've used film.

yes, i've tried.. but it never fails to overexpose? Should I send it in then?
Thanks anyway, LCT!

Stupid question perhaps but when you meter on the beam, for instance, do you think to press the AE lock button before recomposing?

If your ISO is high and your lens wide open the camera will over expose no matter what in bright light. Failing that, you're not getting typical results from your camera. Did you try using manual exposure instead of aperture priority? R-D1s typically automatically underexpose by a third of a stop in order not to clip highlights.

Generally the RD1 underexposes if anything - usually by about 2/3 of a stop - mine does this and anecdotal evidence suggests that the camera is trying to protect highlights. The most effective way of determining if you have a problem would be to compare against a light meter reading or another digital if you have one. One other possibility is if you are using the film settings - one of the variables is contrast and it may be that the previous user has set a high contrast value - clutching at straws, but worth checking that your film setting is set to standard. Also, make sure the ISO isn't set so high that you are beyond the 1/2000th limit of the cameras exposure capability.
Good luck.
Good luck.

done!

thanks for all the help, guys. It was a problem with the camera. Luckily, the shopkeeper had an extra r-d1s to trade while he sent this one in for repairs.
Anyway, off the track for abit, is there a difference between the old 28mm 1.9 Ultron and the new 28mm 2.0 ultron on the r-d1s? Which one would u go for?

The 28/2 is difficult to focus at slower apertures than f/2 in my experience. Would be due to focus shift and the 28/1.9 would be better from this viewpoint according to Sean Reid. See:

Mine under exposes as well, almost by one stop.
