Although this is strictly speaking a RF forum, many people here are not only listening to the gospel of Barnack, but like to use other analogue gear as well.

Recently I got my Yashica Mat 124 back, freshly CLA'd by Will van Manen. Put some film through it and also bought an Epson V500 to be able to scan the negs. As always, Will did a great job and the negs, well, they thrill me no end. Talk about resolution!

Those look very good...I have to ask, however

Are you using the stock film holders on the V500. I came to the conclusion, after using a friends "betterscanning" holders that the stock MF holders are an inferior product. However, I was pleased with the V500 for 35mm with the stock holders and for MF with the better holders.

Thanks.

The supplied film holders for MF are frankly cr*p with the V500. Flimsy and hard to get the film in them correctly. But the results are still very good. But as I (much to my surprise) got a decent bonus this year think I'll order the betterscanning holders soon.

I use the Epson software btw. The user interface is almost the same as it was for my ancient (11 years old now) Perfection 1200 Photo. So using it is a breeze. Not tried the V500 with Vuescan yet, but that will in all probability work fine too.

I've had some problems with the V500 stock holders but once I get the hand of them (and once the film is flat) I like the results.

I just had my 124g CLA'd by Mark Hama. I still haven't tested it out yet!

I'm not much of a lover of old trains but I do love TLR's and the 124G is one of my favourites.

I use a V700, I'm assuming the MF film carriers are almost identical to the V500. So far I've had no issues but might try the Betterscanning holders in the future.

Photographing the angular shapes and boldness of aging machinery is as good as it gets, in my mind. Living in rural USA doesn't allow me nearly as much access to trans as I would like, though I did put up a favorite track picture a while back.

I would love to get back to a twin lens again. Used a cheap Yashica as a kid and always liked it. Just looked at it the other day. All of the plastic leather is gone from the one side. It has hardened to glass and breaks off in big slivers. I should have the camera recovered some time. It is no match for a Mat though. It did lovely B&W for me back 50 years ago, though.

Thanks for sharing the fine shots and the good memories.

FWIW, I scan all my negatives (95 percent
from various Rolleiflexes these days) with
an outdated Epson 4990 flatbed and I don't
even bother with film holders. I just lay
the negatives emulsion-side down directly
on the scanner glass, and then reverse the
image in Photoshop after the scan. The
negative will want to curl a bit so I weigh
the corners down with coins to hold the
frame flat on the glass. See my Flickr stream

www.mcnew.net/sandersnyc

for hundreds of examples -- I do all my
scanning this way and it's much easier and
better than bothering with holders.

The 124g is one of my all time favorites...I love the neg size and the what the glass will produce from this camera...
I always look forward to seeing and printing those negs...
I like the second shot...it really has that Yashinon look...
