My young nephew (19 yo) has just called me by phone: despite being "put aside" by his classmates boasting their latest (I guess simple) digital p/s for a theatrical show (!) he managed to go there with F80, a 400 iso roll, 50 F/1.8 and is shooting at -1 EV (following my suggestion).

Even if aperture is critical (he has to shoot almost always F/1.8 or a little more)
he's able to get times around 1/100s - 1/250s according to the part of the stage where he focuses and meters. I suggested him (who's around 15 m away of the stage), if he feels that autofocus could have problems, to fix focus over half the stage and blocks it there turning to manual and check only shooting times.

I'm pretty sure he will be able to surprise them later ! I really doubt that his classmates (which don't have for sure any clue about noise, d/r, w/b and so on) will be able to shoot without flash in complete automation and with ridiculous aperture lenses, and if they do, can you imagine continuous distracting flashes during a show ???

Go Gaetano, Go, Go, Go !!!

p.s. Tomorrow he's going to face a 7th grade (of 12 total) english private master test. He's not required for public school, still, he's still doing as well as a private economic master in business administration (again, he's only 19 y.o.)

You should be proud! Good job in telling him how to get the best shots for that situation. I hope Gaetano's photos turn out well.

Yes, I do am proud of him. Despite his young age he's involved in many active and interesting things, and always shows a strong will, differently from many youngs who think only to have fun at that age. About the pictures, I guess I'll know in a couple of weeks when I'll go down to them in Southern Italy (for a wedding)
