help me choose a film

I am pretty sure i can get this using kodachrome and a little photoshop but i was wondering if anyone had anymore tips. i would like to shoot 120 or even 4x5 but that rules out kodachrome. i was thinking maybe kodak EPP or even fuji Reala as those have more subtle colors. obviously the light needs to be nice and diffused but i am thinking about the elements i can control.

Do you know a lab that will do partial bleach bypass for you?

I'd use Kodak Ektar 100 in 120 to start and then a bit of photoshop. If you email kprodigital@kodak.com and ask, they'll send you a free sample roll of it 🙂

What equipment will you use? I think an older lens with lower contrast might be a good idea, if available. I agree Reala is a good choice. Too bad some of the Agfa emulsions aren't available. On the Kodak side I would say even Portra 160NC might work if handled properly.

capitalk: i don't know a lab that will do partial bleach bypass but i'm in LA so i'm sure i could find one.

wlewisii: i have used ektar and had mixed results and usually i don't like it. never tried it in 120 though. sometimes i find a weird cast unless it's in just the right conditions but the pics you provided look pretty nice. especially the reds.

trius: i have access to variety of gear. Leica RFs, Nikon MF SLR, Hasselblad, 4x5,

I think i am primarly going to shoot with my trust Nikon f2 and Kodachrome. it seems that everyone in the 70s shot with that combination so i think that should get me pretty close. for medium format i have an old rolleicord from the 30's and that with reala or EPP should look great. i do love Portra 160 NC and might go with that since it's a little warmer than the reala.

I'll agree with the idea of Reala behind an uncoated '30's lens as a good way to go as well it certainly is one of my favorite combinations... OTOH, your Nikon & Kodachrome will probably get you there as well as anything.

It seems like a difficult assignment; perhaps you might do well to consider having multiple formats along and seeing which works best at the light table/photoshop screen?
