Why is the 35mm Equiv. Ignored for Crop DSLRS?

Once again: Sigma EX 1.8/24 (works like a 36mm as the Nikon version on a crop Nikon and as a 38mm as the Canon version on a crop Canon - and it's not an APS lens, so it wil work on a film body!) - fantastic lens!!

Another thing that just crossed my mind: I think the reason is simple. Zoom lenses.

Zoom lenses by and large seem to be the optic of choice, rather than a fixed focal length, with today's digital photographer.

For the companies, why bother putting money into developing a "new" 50mm lens when you can sell hundreds of thousands of kit lenses?

Look at that new Olympus micro 4/3rds camera. The only prime made for it is exactly that, a 35 (well, 34) equivalent. Somebody thinks it's important.
