I recently went to Shanghai for a few days. I took my M6TTL with a Summicron 35/2 ASPH, C-Sonnar 50/1.5 and Hexanon 90/2.8. I took only three rolls with me (I did not want to shoot too many photos, I was just staying for 2 days), 1 roll of Fuji Provia 400, 1 roll of Kodak BW400CN and 1 roll of Kodak Tmax 400.
Here are some of the photos I took.

Nice series ! I like #2, #10, and #13 best. Which of the lenses you brought did you use most ?

Be careful taking photos in places like this in Shanghai, you dont want the Chinese online community accusing you of being influenced by Transformers 2

Thank you all for the nice comments.
Gabor - I used the C-Sonnar most, then Summicron and finally the Hexanon. FYI, the last 2 colour shots were taken with the C-Sonnar (but I guess that is pretty obvious...)
Avotius - I saw Transformer 2 at the cinema last week, what a waste of time and money!!! So when are we seeing you in HK again?

Oh I dont know when I will get to HK again, leaving tomorrow to go back to the states on a trip I cannot afford, especially during the busy business season here but I got no choice unfortunately.
And as for Transformers 2, I dont know if you heard or not, plus it seems it might be different in HK, but here on the mainland they edited the whole Shanghai part of the movie out. Anywhere there was anything that looked Chinese or the such was edited out because of massive complaints on Chinese forums that the movie was an insult to Chinese people because Shanghai was attacked and they portrayed it as a run down poor area and also because the gov censors anything "bad" that could[not] happen here too. Its the same total BS, insecure ranting that keeps "them" from being invited to the good parties

Good series, well-presented. Thank you for thinking about it, and self-editing so tightly. These come across as photos taken by someone who likes being there, and who can feel the pulse of the place. In so doing you bring it alive for your viewers.
I really enjoyed your Flickr streams too - you have a lot of good material there. What I particularly appreciate is that most of your images stand on their own, or work as part of a narrative. They need no explanation or wordy caption "crutch".
More please.

Bill

Zhang Yimou the greatest Chinese director in modern times was also criticized for telling too many stories about poor people. To be referred to as backwards is the ultimate insult to the people. On the other hand Mission Impossible 3 shot in Tongli near Suzhou was pretty good.

great shots! I like colour ones better. Please post more!
PS - I'm surprised that you used 35mm lens lens. Do you think if you had your new 50/1.1 - it would be better than Sonnar you used? If so - why?

I think if I had the 50/1.1, I would still have used the Sonnar, it is much more compact and I prefer the rendering, the C-Sonnar is my favorite lens (BTW, it is the f2.8 optimized version).
Here are two more colour shots but I am not very pleased with them (both shot with Hexanon 90/2.8)...

Great series, and the last two color shots are very nice, very 'Chinese'.
BTW, i'm better now, after 2 days of rest.

Sorry, I am very bad with names and I can't remember the name of that particular place... The only thing I can remember is that it was behind Yuyuan Garden, maybe 500m away toward the river but I doubt that may be of any help to you...

Photos 1 to 6 are Kodak Tmax 400, 7 to 12 Kodak BW400CN and 12, 13 plus the last two are Fuji Provia 400.
I was also surprised by the amount of grain on the Tmax 400 but I guess this is due the chemicals and scanner used by the lab.
