They are indeed hens' teeth. Excellent paralax-correct 50 ramelines in a 1:1 combined viewfinder. It's like an uber-barnack in some ways. I'm glad I bought them in spite of the occasional Yashica YF chintzy faceplate comments. This thing is a tank. It confirmed my impresion about Nicca: they made great quality gear but were bought by a more cost-conscious competitor, Yashica. [I say "them" - I have 2 IIIL's for which I fought some nasty bid-wars. (^-^)v I'll likely sell the other to fund the purchase of more esoteric camera purchases. :-D]

The universal finder isn't bad either. I wish it had framelines, but it is parallax-correcting and covers all but the very wide lenses nicely.

They're not too common in Japan, either. I've seen 3 and bought 2 of them. One site says that YF's are #'d 450xxx - 49xxxx. Another, http://translate.google.com/transla...+3l&hl=en&safe=off&client=opera&rls=en&hs=aVE, indicates relative numbers of 10000 vs 2000. Who knows? I just know that I like to shoot 50mm LTM lenses and this is a nice fit. 🙂

In fairness to the Yashica, I have never handled one. I'd like to, though.
 
Yashica bought out Nicca to get the focal plane shutter machinery, which they then used in their first SLR. I think it was called a Pentamatic. I had a YF for awhile in the early 60's but it only had 50 and 100mm frames and they both were a bit undersized.

Thanks for the info. I read the description on CQ and was intrigued. The framelines seemed like a potential advantage (in terms of flexibility) or disadvantage (clutter), but it's hard to know without giving it a test-drive.

It's a beautiful camera in that picture above....

My trusty old Nikon D50 with it's small but mighty AFS 18mm F1.8 is on loan (It always is), and the D90/AFS 105mm VR, just is
way too big for the backpack. Therefore, I had to take this old girl out for a walk. The results were very good.
I might even buy a roll or two of non-WalMart film next week.

I have three Niccas/Tower cameras and I love them. Not as silent as Leica IIIf's that I have but just as good for taking pictures.

I have a couple of 5Ls - a tower and a nicca. The only drawback I have found is incompatibility with leica accessories. But I guess that fights GAS. 🙂

Got this as a junker with missing parts, and fixed it to working condition:

Replaced the shutter. Most the of the critical parts were there. The missing parts came from surplus FED, Zorki, and even Leica parts. The perfectly fitting baseplate was from a FED.
