Hi All,

I've been lucky to find some more of the original Canon 40mm filters for my black Canon 35mm F2. So now I have the UV, Yellow 1, Green 1 (have two) and the Orange 1. Here's my latest snag:

The original slimline 40mm filters don't vignette (some other filters do), I can just put a silver lenscap on the lens/filter, and it's very compact, and well protected, when I travel.
 
Congrats! I was looking at those filter but don't really use green or orange. Although on hindsight, orange would have been nice since the red ones are so hard to come by.

Hi, Canon filters can be dated exactly by the info that is on the edge of that filter.

The 40mm Green "MG55C" was issued in 1961 while the 40mm "O1" between 1955 and 1956 with two variations of the chrome sheen during 1955. One was shiny and the other mat. Canon filters I think are unique in there packaging and presentation of there filters especially there early ones which came in colorful filter stacks as they are known. Peter

Nice find. I use a step-up to 40.5 filters, but then I want to shade it with a hood and.... you guessed it: vignetting. PITA considering that the lens alone requires no hood.
 
Has anybody come up with a filter/hood combo that does not vignette? The vignetting problem has kept me from pulling the trigger on this lens - I pretty much use a UV on everything to protect the front element.
 
Yes I have a combo that won't vignette. The Canon 35-2.8/50-1.8 hood, with KODAK WRATTEN series VI filters, fits like it was made for it, and dosen't vignette with the 35mm F2, at any aperture or focusing distance. It works perfectly, and relatively easy to find and inexpensive. I have the wrattens in all the standard colors, in my Series VI color-coded Canon filter holder. It's a sweet setup.

Ok...... do you use a series filter holder/retaining ring, or does the clamp-on hood simply hold the filter in place?
 
The front part of the Canon Hood unscrews, you drop the Kodak Wratten in, and screw it back together. The Kodak filters fit tightly in the hood, and don't chatter around at all. Some other Series VI filters I have tried, do fit too loosely in the hood. But not the Kodak Wrattens.
