now I really really want the Pen but it's an extortionate amount of money- particularly with the viewfinder and pancake lens which is how I would want to have it to begin with ideally.

I had a gx200 but i sold it in a moment of madness

In short I cannot afford the pen, not unless I put it on credit  but is it worth the stress?

does the gx200 outperform in certain areas anyway?

I began my search wanting a compact dslr but have since decided that a black box just isn't for me (a little black box is of course fine but a big or biggish black box I cannot possibly deal with)

so it's a toss up between the two and I cannot decide what to do.

ps. I would like to start taking more photographs of the horses, is a gx200 completely impracticable in such circumstances?

not major action shots but the only reason I am not upgrading to a gr digital 2 is the lack of zoom- obviously neccesary to the lens quality but it doesn't fit what I want at the moment.

I am not in this category - but what about the Panasonic G1 - or even a Nikon D40 (I would guess there will be rebates because of the D3000) - if you do not want a black box - just paint it a bit :p.

g10, gx200, grd - good camera, bad pictures

ep-1 - not quite perfect camera body, much better pictures

its a tricky choice ;)

Personally, I don't feel it's worth taking a picture if it doesn't look good technically, so wouldn't go with the GX 200/G10 etc., but I'm not totally satisfied with the Pen either. The AF isn't that bad, but I'm waiting to see what Panasonic bring out next.

why do you say bad pictures?

I got some really good stuff (by my standards at least) from the gr digital- my only fault being it was rather slow at times

~ I guess it's a matter of taste. I always had the feeling, when I got a good picture with my GRD, that it would have been better if I had taken it with another camera (too much dof, noisy, etc.). That really annoyed me, I didn't get that feeling with other cameras I have owned.

With the film GR1/S/V, the picture was no worse than if I'd taken it with a Leica/SLR/etc. (or at least very similar). All the compact digital cameras so far seem to have a fairly big quality deficit compared to modern DLSRs.

That said, a lot of people love the GRD and similar cameras, maybe it depends on what kind of thing you like in your cameras and photos.

Just for reference, my GRD stuff on flickr:

~ dunno. If I couldn't afford a Leica, I'd buy one of the many film cameras which are just as good but still cheaper, the Yashica Mat 124G comes to mind. But that's just me, maybe if you prefer a zoom lens or the instant replay ability of digital it would't work so well.

I really look forward to the days when buying a compact digital camera doesn't involve taking a significant step down in quality from a DSLR.

the instant replay nor zoom doesn't bother me overly- just 1* zoom would satisfy me

the only thing is I do like post processing my images and I don't know how to do that with film and wouldn't really trust boots!
