I'm unsupervised for the next two weeks. My top model and true love is back home visiting on the east coast.


I've kinda wanted a little pinhole for use with my film. But looking at flickr, most of the pinhole compositions I see aren't really anything too exciting, and lo-fi and blurry for the sake of being lo-fi and blurry. So I always put off making or buying one. I'm too lazy to make one anyway.

But last night I saw this guy's work with the 135. Nicely composed, seems surprisingly sharp.

So I impulsively bought one for use with Panf F Plus or Adox Pan 25. I'll make solem and lonesome ghostly photos until my true love returns to me. Well, depending on when I get the thing from Hong Kong. Anyone have experience or examples of these?
 
His photos are very surprisingly sharp, as are those by the RFF member who just got a 6x9 Zero Image camera. I have a pinhole body cap for my Mamiya 645 and one for Nikon 35mm and neither produces any kind of detail at all. Here's a couple of shots from my 645 pinhole body cap:

They're cool pics, but NOTHING like I'm seeing from the Zeros. I WANT ONE! LOL

Well, at first I had that problem as well, and that was on 6x6. But after a while, I found that the main obstacle to getting sharp images is the thickness of the material the pinhole is made in. I now use aluminium foil with the tiniest possible hole from a needle, and get better results with this on 35mm that I did with thicker material on 6x6..

Aluminum foil gives a nice clean hole. Paper gives a hole with little fibers arount the edge. Try holding the needle with pliers and heating the tip red hot with a cigarette lighter and you can burn a hole in black paper with clean edges.
 
The guy sent me a message saying these were done using the 6x9 and not the 135. My mistake.

Anyway mine has been shipped and I should be getting it in 2.3 business days.

Maybe thats my problem, maybe the metal in the body cap pinholes I bought is too thick? I'll have to try and make my own and see what i can get.
 
Hey Darkhorse, Pinhole boy here from the flickr space you mentioned in your post over here. The 135 version is pretty cool I have a friend who has just bought one and his initial tests are looking nice with 25 asa films, it is extremley economical and is a great way to get into pinhole, Let me know if you want any other info. I have been aware of this forum for a while but this post seemed to be a good reason to answer.

I have a roll of Pan F Plus waiting for when it arrives, then I'll hea. I'm just debating whether using Rodinal (I don't have a big enough tank for 1:100 stand like you) or my HC110 (F dilution).
 
Pinhole Boy, your work is gorgeous, welcome to RFF.

Darkhorse, Rodinal 1+50 is very beautiful with Pan-F and much more workable. I used it a lot when I lived in Santa Fe, though I've not done so since moving back to Indiana because no one here sells it. Here's a shot with Pan-F and Rodinal 1+50. Not pinhole, shot with an Olympus OM SLR and 35mm f2 lens.

Hey Chriscrawfordphoto, wouldn't that make a great pinhole camera, although a bit heavy to move around :), just testing out some stand developed Fuji Acros 100 in Rodinal, I have started making a note of what music is playing in the background as developing takes place (why ? you tell me, it just seems funny that it could make any difference to the tonal values......but hey you never know :)

So we had a bit of Jethro Tull and 'Thick as a brick' being prog it went on a bit but the timing was just right :)

My camera arrived in LA around 3am this morning. Maybe I'll have it today, definitely by tomorrow. Eagerly anticipating.

An experienced photographer once told me that the best film for pinhole work is Fomapan 100, aka Arista EDU Ultra from Freestyle; I haven't tried it but might do so some time :)
