Leica M9 Assembly

This is a funny link. Why on earth would any technology manufacturer show how they are assembling their products? Is this some of leica-glasnost thing?

I did notice that they were assembling the M8s as well as the M9s. That means that there are still a few M8s available for those who liked that one....

Anybody know if the sensor cleaning gear they use at the factory is something you can buy? It looked quite professional, easy to use, and safe.

Yeah, Olsen, thanks for posting. Just still wonder why Leica releases videos like that. The one about the fact that "Lecia still manufactures film cameras," I could kind of understand. Afterall noboday is really going to copy that camera anymore. The digital camera would seem a more likely candidate for copying...

You can't copy an electronic design and software based on a video.
 
I think it's great to show such a video. No other manufacturer does that and this is really a Leica signature. I take this as a free gift from them.
 
One can find out a lot more if they actually buy the camera and take it apart. Probably won't learn enough to replicate one.

I can take my car apart. I won't be able to build a new one much less put it back together without winding up with a few "extra" parts.
 
The video is absolutely moving 🙂 and it witnesses how Leica is still a small company with a human touch...
 
Thanks Olsen, I really enjoyed that. A lot of manufacturers give tours . It doesn't mean you can replicate what they do just by watching. I have an Airstream Travel trailer and it was nice to take the tour and see how they are built. Completly hand assembled. I don't tow it with the Mini though😀
 
am I right in understanding that each camera's sensor must be manually shimmed to ensure proper alignment?

if this is so, that's astounding... and frankly a bit disturbing, no wonder Leica has QC issues...

No, it's because they are so precise and exacting in every detail. Why do you think their lenses are so good and cost so much, because they cut corners? Heh.
