Recently a friend of mine gave me a Ricoh GR1s that he had sitting around for a few years in one of his dry boxes. It had sat for a couple years with a dead battery in it so I swapped out a new battery and fired it up but noticed a few problems:
The top LCD illuminates but only when I am cycling through the mode button can I see the mountain icon fine but the center spot icon is un-see-able unless I hold the camera at an angle away from me, no of the other icons are visible. The film counter side is kind of dead it would seem, sometimes slight evidence of a number shows but not for long. I dont know if there are any other icons on there but if there are I dont see them when pushing stuff.
Second the viewfinder has some issues as well. In light I can just make out the framelines and the 30 icon but nothing else. No other numbers, no focus points, nothing. In the dark when the illumination comes on inside the finder I can make out a lot more, a ghost of the center focus point and the right one but not the left, the flower, and single person icon and the parallax bar, but nothing else.
Third when I stuck my bad/tester roll into the camera the film counter LCD sort of comes back to life but the numbers are incomplete and buggy. But with the roll of film in the camera the shutter is not opening. When I take the roll out of the camera its the same story, not opening shutter.
I put it on the T mode but guessing which one it was and the shutter did not open either, and now I just discovered the flash is not firing either.
So obviously this camera has a lot of problems, it might have sat too long, which is really sad too because this is a mint sample of the camera otherwise. Any suggestions on what I can do?

My old R-1 that was dropped had the same problems. I sold it AS a couple of years back. I've not seen electronics turn like this without some physical issue, be it a drop, moisture, something.
Check out the www.ricohforum.com. The guy who runs it is great and it's full of great infomation and idea. He post here from time to time too. Might just be a ribbon cable coming loose.

Try here ...
http://criscam.com/newsite/third_party_logistics_ricoh.php
or
Ricoh Japan can fix your camera for under $200.00
They replace the LCD and whatever else needs to be done ..there are some common problems with these cameras and they address these issues as well by replacing the necessary parts with new . I have sent 2 cameras to them and they came back like new .....

I found another place over here in the States in Texas but could not find anyone who has used them. Criscam seems expensive but over here in the States there are few options. I've heard great things about Richo EU and I suspect that Japan is every bit as good as they are. I wonder how much they would charge me to do the LCD on my GRD? Criscam wants $200 and I'm this close || to taking the money and putting it towards a GRD III instead.
