I'm having a hard time choosing between the two. Here is the background. I'm off to Rome and Florence next month for my honeymoon. I like the look of both films. I have used both. But, I'm wondering will I need those extra 2 stops that I get with the 400VC. I checked that sunset is around 5PM. In my shoes what would you pick? I will be shooting my wife (as of next month) and just the scenery. I will have 2 M-mount bodies. The other will have Tri-X rated at ASA 400.

Since you'll have Tri-X for low light, I'd suggest the Ektar. It's got a look all of it's own. I find VC just a bit too much in town. If you were doing fall color or birds or something of that ilk, I could see it but not for that kind of trip. I especially think the old stone work will do better with the Ektar.
Enjoy!

Once you are married, just ask your wife. Your wife is always right.

I'd bring ektar for the morning/early evening, portra 160nc for the middle of the day and portra 400 for the evening.

That just sounds like alot of film.
I have the CV 40mm f1.4 if I need the extra stop with ektar.

1st, congratulations!
2nd, I agree w/the majority that you should go predominantly w/the 400VC. However, I would also bring a couple rolls of the Ektar for the potential sunny/bright day(s) & maybe a couple rolls of Neopan 1600 for some night shooting.

I prefer 400VC. Ektar in my experience has such wild color behavior.

Thanks.
I was thinking like 10 rolls of Tri-X and like 11 rolls of color. I don't think I will shoot that much. But, better safe than sorry. It is a honeymoon after all. Not a shoot for Conde Nast. Maybe 6 rolls of 400VC and 5 rolls of Ektar. I think I'll be covered.

Totally understand that you might be busy doing something other than shooting.
Also don't know how long you'll be traveling.
Sounds like you have a good plan; have a great trip!

I really disliked 400vc. I haven't tried Ektar yet (next on list) but realy like NC.

Congratulations!
I'm (for the most part) a fuji man and so far my luck with Ektar has not been very good (not the film's fault for the most part though). VC is not my cup of tea either.
...wait, why am I writing this then?...
....oh, yeah - I just wanted to suggest NC (if it has to be Kodak) - always worked much better for me for people (gives more room for post processing too). And you know you'd like to capture the spark in your new wife's eye with some beautiful Italian sight for a background.

I will be in Rome for 5 days and Florence for 6 days. I will be taking the day trip from Florence through Tuscany. I think it will cover Pisa, Sienna and San Gimignano. The only drawback I can come up with is that my widest lens is a 28mm. Oh well. It's all about having fun, right? Thanks again.

if you are taking a lot of portraits of your wife or architecture pictures, 400NC is probably the better way to go on this one. the colours are still bright enough to be vibrant for most fun and sun use.

Congratulations first of all!
For the color film - take just the Ektar - early mornings and late evenings you should not be out shooting anyhow, right
Enjoy your time - best to both of you!
