"Private Department Party"

!!

That's my favorite.

Here's the poem that goes with it. They're by Ed Skoog, an old friend and a great writer.

Have you considered putting the photos in a talking picture frame, so the buyer of the photo could re-live the experience of hearing the poem read, by pressing the sound button on the frame?

This could add value, no?

John,

Congratulations on the gallery show! I won't be in Roch that weekend, otherwise I'd come down for any opening event.

Nice series of photos, John. I like the basketball gym shot a lot.

And of course Whole Personal Melons.

Whole personal melons, I walked into the supermarket, saw the sign, walked out, drove home, got my camera, drove back, took the photo. :D

And interestingly, that gym photo was the picture that made me realize I should invest in some decent equipment, and eventually led me here. I took that with a Fujifilm point-and-shoot at high ISO, and though it was a good little camera I struggled mightily trying to get any sharpness and detail out of the picture. It continues to vex me today, and will when I hang it. It's still one of my favorites though.

Anyway, thanks a lot, guys!

John, I love the images. Especially the Personal Melons and Wait. How did the show go? Did mom buy one? Congrats to you. Rob

Hey, thanks, Rob! The show was great--I was on my feet the whole three hours of gallery night, talking to people. A lot of my students came, and a few unexpected friends. I took a few pics of the space; they're drying in the back room right now. No sales yet, but the show will be up for a month, you never know.

It was a wild couple of days...my dept at the College had Toni Morrison, the novelist, visiting, and so I spent 48 hours stalking around parties, readings, talks, and exhibitions with my M7 and some Neopan 1600. She was amazing--an all-around cool lady. In front of a very large snap-happy crowd she said, "Now all you photographers, take all you want. But don't go putting 'em up on Facebook."

I teach English (creative writing, specifically) at Cornell.

I think she was just taking a little swipe at Facebook, not the internet in general. I'll definitely post a few pics!

Here are a few quick pics...one of the show, and two of Toni Morrison at Cornell. In the first one she's talking with Ken McClane and Margo Crawford, two of my colleagues...in the other she is chatting at a reception with my friend Alison Lurie, another novelist, who knows her from back in the day. Alison has a Pulitzer Prize, Morrison has the Nobel. Crazy!
