Olympus E-P1

As for the Panasonic 20, how about a nice CV 40mm finder?
The Cosina made viewfinders have a 3:2 aspect ratio. Bummer :bang:

I have tried a Ricoh GV2 finder with the kit zoom at 28mm. It's a good finder with a very bright image. Here are a few pictures of the E-P1 with the Ricoh finder:

In fact, I don't like the E-P1 with an external finder. I much prefer using the LCD screen, even in bright light. Here are some pictures taken yesterday in bright tropical sun at noon time. The framing and focusing were done on the LCD screen without any particular difficulty:

I like the finder cause it's like a pacifier for me. I spent 40+ years with an M4 or something and a 35 cron and that's the way I see....it's not by choice, it's by addiction. In my mind, the Pen is similar to an M4...with the finder on top....I'm just about comfortable.....I have been nailing images like crazy....every time I go out...I get what I'm looking for...
So, an EVF to me is like a waste...it reminds me on an SLR...like the G1 kinda thing....
just the shape of the camera nauseates me......

I might just use a CV finder and then set the camera to 3:2...that just might work with the 20mm....

Yeah, that's the ticket. I hope Olympus brings out the E-P2 with the built-in viewfinder, and then we'll both be happy. You're already happy as soon as you get the 40mm finder.

Who says the E-P1 doesn't work well in low light?

Who says the E-P1 doesn't work well in low light?

Some people think that the Olympus E-P1 isn't very good when the light falls as the AF is a bit troublesome and there is no focus assist lamp.

Here are a couple of photos I took tonight in poor lighting.

The E-P1 set to ISO3200, f/5.6 (well I was at the 200mm end of a Panasonic G Vario 45-200mm zoom) and shutter speeds of 1/60s and 1/50s respectively, -0.3EV. Camera set to aperture priority, S-AF, auto white balance and these are unedited jpg files out of the camera - they have just been downsized a bit...

Would the EP-1 and the Pany 20/1.7 make a good match? Especially for low light with IS built in?

I fully expect it will. I will see the 20 in a few weeks in NY and plan on picking one up shortly after that.

Yes,

this is a good match.

Here are some pictures with the Panny cake on the E-P1
(sorry no low light)

Just got my EP-1 with the 17mm pancake last Friday and I am finding it a very competent camera with some low light ability I really didn't expect. At the suggestion of a follow photographer, I put a small marker dot in center of the front element of viewfinder, (yes, it took a number of attempts), and aligned the focusing area to match it. Surprising it works pretty well allowing me to focus the image without needing to use the LCD. I wish Olympus had of put a small crosshair mark in the middle of the finder.
Here's a grab shot of my son shot at ISO800 with no noise reduction, just minor processing - RAW in LR2.5 and CS4.
. . . Burkey

Hello!

Now that the EP-2 soon is here, can we expect that the price on the EP-1 falls significantly in the near future?

EP-1 looks kinda cool, but I cant afford it at the moment

I wouldn't hold my breath. The EP2 is only a minor step in upgrade.
The only Pen 1 users that will sell to get the Pen 2 are the ones that want that stupid EVF thingy.
Most shooters coming from RF cameras won't be selling the Pen 1.

What may effect a dramatic sell off is, if OLY doesn't do a firmware upgrade. If they actually drop support of the Pen 1, you will see them selling fast.....
That's the only way I would ever get rid of mine.

Love the way this camera makes me feel......

The E-P1 is a Keeper

The E-P1 is a Keeper

Well, a least for me. As I previously mentioned, I placed a small dot with a sharpie on the outside element on the Olympus OVF as a focus reference point. It took a couple of trys to align it with the movable auto focus "target". But it does allow me to focus without using the LCD. Yup, it's a bit off now and then acknwoledging parallax but it really is worth a try if you haven't done so yet. (Kudos to Will at Photo Village for the suggestion.):)
I normally don't work with JPEGs but this morning I found my son at our dining room table reviewing his collection of "Guitar Magazine" issues. I took a couple of quick frames at ISO 620, aperture priority, f3.5, 1/25 sec., with the E-P1/17mm and just for fun opened a couple of the JPEGs in CS4 instead of my usual RAW/LR2.5 work flow. "Geezem crowbar" as the locals might say, very nice quality. CS4 work included smart sharpen, B+W conversion, a bit of dodging and burning and of course the regular downsizing for posting. I'm very pleasantly surprised at what I found. :)

Would I be stupid if i sold my Canon EOS 450D to finance buying a Olympus E-P1?

I bought the Canon in august, still would lose some money...

I didn´t know I wanted an E-P1 when I bought the Canon :bang:

I threw over my DSLR rig for m4/3 and am quite happy with the decision. i think this is where the innovation's going to be in the next couple of years...very fun, versatile system!

Not stupid, but I don't know that I would recommend it. That really depends on your shooting. For me the EP-1 is a great carry around camera. I have mine on a Y strap and it is just very convenient to grab for a shot, or just let it hang there. It does not do everything I want a camera to do though. For "real" shooting, macro, tele, anything which the m43 kit just doesn't exist for yet, my Pentax K10d is a better tool. Not to mention the Pentax lenses I have are better than the m43 lenses available (including the 20/1.7), I just am not ready yet to cut the string. I have not bought a more recent Pentax body though. So, that is something.

Yeah, it's my Pentax rig I threw over for m4/3. I had the K7 for a while, and it really is a great camera--but ultimately Pentax digital never made me quite as happy as my ME Super and LX did. So I kept the film rig and ditched the digital.

With the Panasonic 45-200 and my Pen lenses with extension tubes, I'm pretty much all set for tele and macro (neither of which are hugely important in my photography). I got a GF1 and, instead of paying $200 for the EVF, just bought a used G1 body.
