I lived and worked in Japan for a year, more than 20 years ago now. The experience still haunts my visual memory. I would love to return to see more. I'm going to start scanning some of my Kodachrome slides taken there. Here are the first 2 of my best.
Feel free to add your own best "quintessential images" from Japan.

Frank,
My list of photos could be quite extensive. I live in Japan. I am haunted everyday with the idea of living here ;-) These are not the best photos I have taken, but they represent Japan.

Ride, dive, shoot.
I'm a Japanese grew up in Japan, then moved to the US when I was 19. Now I rarely visit there and when I do, I see Japan with both Japanese and foreigner POVs.

You've got to admit it's a special place.

「KY」か~?(笑)
FrankS probably didn't have this type of quintessential image from Japan in mind when he started the thread, but I guess it qualifies. Thanks for the laugh, Steve

Couldn't help myself, I figured this sort of thing might be one of the reasons Frank found Japan so unforgettable.

良かったね!
Some beautiful shots in this thread. Here's a few shots I took at a local summer festival here in Yokohama. That's the Japan I know.
I think it's funny that Hiroshimayaki is at every matsuri. I guess all the drinking doesn't make northerners want to look at monjayaki, eh?![]()

One of my favorite places I've visited, hopefully going back next year.
