M8 in UK

I've been a lurker here while researching the M8. I formerly used Rolleiflexes but for the last couple of years have used a DSLR. Unfortunately, unlike with the Rolleis, I can number the reasonable images on the fingers of one hand! Part of the problem is that I don't really need 27 auto focus points and 200 menu listings......

If I aquire a secondhand M8 with a couple of lenses, will i be able to get it serviced in the UK to gain a years warranty? Also, it seems that most of the realiability problems were in th efirst 1500 cameras to be made, so does anyone know th eserial numbers or how to find out please?
 
If you buy it from a good dealer you should get a years warranty from date of purchase, it won't be like the Passport though, just mechanical faults. But if you buy second hand independantly you can't have it serviced or send it to Leica and have the warranty or Passport topped up. I would have thought that by now any camera with some use on it will have had any faults rectified, so beware early numbers that are advertised as 'only used once' etc.Steve
 
Steve, thanks for your reply. What is the "passport"? How long have you been an M8 user?

I looked at your 'flickr' page,....you are not only prolific but very skilled and superbly observant. You need to select the best for your own website where the images can be better presented.
 
Leica have a service centre in Milton Keynes, but the word on the street is that you're better off having it sent to Solms in Germany for any work.

You didn't state where you are in the UK, but my I use Stephens in Manchester and I Highly recommend them.

Lecuit in Luxembourg, official Leica importer still has a stock of new M8s at a low price.

I'm not an M8 user (film, but with M9 on order), but warranties work the same for all Leica equipment. The Passport is what comes with new cameras and covers nearly all eventualities, and can be passed on to another user if the camera is sold within the period that it runs. Outside of the Passport period a Leica dealer should give a mechanical warranty on second hand cameras. If you choose a authorised Leica dealer (nearby if possible) they are the best 'interface' with Leica IMO. Any problem with my cameras and they send it back to Germany for me and give me a call when it comes back. I don't think any repairs are done in Milton Keynes anyway.

Thanks for your comments about my photo's. I use Flickr as a scrapbook to test ideas (photo's always look different when friends and public can see them!). I have so much else on though that maintaining a 'proper' web site isn't feasible at the moment.

The word on the street is right! I speak from both (unhappy) experience of Milton Keynes and (totally satisfied) experience of Solms.

If you need anything doing, send it to Solms. You won't regret it.
 
Would suggest to get it from the Leica dealer cloest to you, otherwise you have to send the camera via post instead of personally taking it for repair when things happened. (Hopefully not, but it happened to me, my M8 just died on me for the Shutter Fault, and I have to send it to London...)


If the used M8 is out of warranty, you can considered getting the upgrade done, which will grant you another 1 year of full guarantee along with quieter shutter/better frameline/unscratchable screen.
