Solution to frayed Domke straps!

After 2 years of heavy use, my domke f803 strap started to fray like crazy, If it kept at the rate it was going i would have to replace it soon.

I did a little bit of research and found "Fray Check" at my local craft store and applied it to the frayed strap edge. Fray check is kind of like glue, but not as gooier. It does make the strap edge kind of ruff, but I like it.

Its been more then a week and no more fray!

Nice thing about the domke straps is that they are reasonably priced. I can't see paying the $35 to $75 some of these companies charge for a STRAP when the $10 domke works perfectly well. But then I prefer cloth seats in a car, hate leather seats...

In fact, the F803's strap is attached to the bag via a pair of twin-loop plastic "rings"; you have to cut the strap off (Domke sews it on, presumably to prevent mishaps) and replace it with something else. Perhaps Domke has an appropriate replacement (the strap on mine is more or less intact, but the sewn-in rubber traction thingies have long since worn through; some hate 'em, but I like 'em). I might inquire just for that reason alone.

Maybe it's the quality of the leather, though, and its age. The best leather seats I ever had were in a Rover 105 that was already pushing 20 years old when I had it in the late 70s.

To go back to the straps, I've always found that straps treated with Fray Check have all the gentle kiss of a cheese-grater. It may be worth adding that the reason some companies' straps cost more than others is that they are both softer and longer wearing: Billingham springs to mind.

Those yellow & black striped Nikon straps are nice and soft and have a suede non-slip patch at the shoulder. I have a couple of them that must be twenty years old, but they still make them.

The rubber threading in my 17 year-old F-2 has finally begun to disintegrate and I got the Domke 2" replacement strap. It's like having a new bag!

Oh hell. Just buy another strap. You're probably using it on a camera that cost anywhere from $200 to $2,000. Spend $20 on another Domke.

I find that with the F-2, as they get old the rubber threads inside the strap fray and eventually are gone. I use the old bag for misc. hardware and buy a new bag. $103 - lasts me 10 years - not bad.

But you can still find F-2's for around a $100.00. Great bag - I have one of them for gear.
