Strap, Wrist strap, Grip. Half Case? Crazy?

Roger, we might be talking about two different things here. And you just prompted me to try something. If I am grabbing or holding the camera, but not in shooting position, the grip provides a more secure hold, as my fingers can now easily cup around the grip without nearly as much muscle tension as without a grip. Think of it like holding onto a stick.

Now, as I lift the camera into shooting position, I find that the grip becomes almost foreign to how I want to hold the camera. My entire hand now rotates foward a small amount. In addition, my shutter finger now goes from a completely flat, "pressing" position, into a more curled, pointed downwards position. Hmmm...this has got me thinking. I don't want to be using the tip of my finger to move the shutter button. I want the pad, with a flatter finger position.

It seems (to me at least), that the grip will provide a more secure way to hold the camera, even while shooting, but might also cause one to modify their hand position while shooting. Enough to cause a problem? Everyone has to try himself, I suppose. I would assume that much might also be dependant on not just the size of your hand, but how about the length of your fingers? Some people may have large hands, but short fingers. In such a case, I can easily see how a grip would be very uncomfortable. But I have fairly large hands and fairly long fingers. That might prove why, even though the grip compromises my shooting position a bit, it's not enough to cause any real problem. That "tooth filling" is very easy to adjust to and disappears almost immediately. 😉

An intriguing analysis. Thanks. It occurs to me that with a neck strap, I lift the camera straight up in sonething very close to the shooting position, so this may explain a great deal.

Luigi wrist straps on both M's--no case.
Luigi wrist strap on my D700.
Luigi Essential strap and the full body Panasonic case for the GF1 ( might lose the strap and case and go with a wrist strap ).

Might reconsider losing the case. GF1 in case took a tumble down a half flight of stairs. Can't imagine the outcome if it wasn't in a fully padded case.

For my RF cameras I use an anatomical leather wrist strap of my own design and manufacture.

I got the regular length, but I have rather small hands and wrists. It fits snuggly. For someone of medium or large hands, you should go for the longer one.

Did you get the standard length? I keep feeling that the standard length wrist strap i ordered may be too short? Just a feeling. Or maybe im wearing it wrong.

Btw, does anyone know if the leica goodies SLING is suitable for the OM1? Has anyone tried it before?

Wrist strap, holding the camera in my right hand. I find than when I throw a strap around my neck, I'm almost always holding the camera with my right hand anyway.

I find that a half case can sometimes improve my grip on a camera, depending on the design of the camera and how it's covered. Beyond that, they annoy me by getting in the way of film changing.

Nice Grip, is that made for the RD-1? Ever since I picked up a Zeiss Ikon at the Photo expo (with a grip) I've been wanting one for my RD-1.

I use straps. My Nikons have Op-Tech straps (D90 and D700) because I wear them whenever I have them out for shooting.

My RF's have lighter straps, and my R D1 has a Zhou half case and a fancy felt backed multicolored strap on it - bling for the baby. 😛

I got used to the neck strap method and find it the handiest way to carry my cameras. I can't do bandolier style either, but admire the wrist strap and grip folks.

Ditto, except I never use half-cases except on cameras w/iffy strap lugs (of course, the case has to have its own lugs).

Standard set-up is a "nekkid" camera worn bandolier style diagonally across my chest from my left shoulder, w/the camera ending up on my right side. If I'm carrying 2 cameras, the 2nd camera usually goes the other way & ends up on my left side. I prefer the diagonal carry because it its more secure than hanging from the shoulder & the camera doesn't bounce as much as when it's simply hanging around my neck.

I like the domke grippers because i can hang them on my shoulder and the camera stays put, or if I reverse the strap then i can wear it across my chest and it slides fairly easily too.

I am a big Artisan&Artist fan. I have their adjustable cotton strap and their half case. I switch between having it extended around my neck/shoulder (aka Bandolier-style 🙂) and shortened to a wrist strap. The half case feels great under the fingers. It definitely improves the grip and isn't as cold as vulcanite and metal.

it fits the rd1 perfectly without any modification, the battery can be inserted and removed (with a bit of hassle) and the sd card is not hampered at all.

the bridge fits a number of nikon bodies as well.

it's beautiful and comfortable and no, i'm not on commission 😉
