How often do you use Flash with RD-1

Is it really worth a flash with RD-1,

I mean, are the RD-1's night shots good enough for not using a flash?

I use flash with the R-D1. I'll see if I can upload som examples. Used mainly w/21f4 at f5,6 or f8 with Metz 48AF for Nikon. Set manually to between 1/4 and 1/128 power depending on distance to subject, and with reflector 45degr. I usuallly set the camera, lens and flash up to work at a certain distance to suit the type of setting, and leave it at that until finished.

as I'm used to my Canon 400D and I use flash a few times I was doubting whether those 50€ for the Nikon SB-27 are worth... Maybe I can use them better than buying a flash for my brand new RD-1

The is no e or iTTL support on the camera, so you're left with manual. And since the flash I already had for my Nikon can be set to full manual, I couldn't be bothered to buy another and possibly smaller flash (with a guide no of 48, full power is seldomly needed).

Never. Prefer 40/1.4 and the effect of narrow DOF. I also suck at flash photography 🙂

I've only used a Nikon Speedlight SB-24 on my R-D1 when I had my one-time adventure as a wedding photographer. And when snapping some pictures of musicians playing in my regular watering hole.

On camera, I occasionally use a sunpak with auto setting. More often I use studio strobe lighting and a handheld meter

I tried, to explain the "Holy guacamole! - part" to my girl friend on the weekend, when I saw the frame the first time in Lightroom.

She was pretty unimpressed. Might have had to do with my ecstatic up and down jumping, while showing her the boring photo of a lens on a bag with my EXIF data tool for film shooting.😛

I am not so much into her handbags too - so I guess, we are even 🙄

I use either a Nikon SB-25 or SB-26 on the R-D1 when I need flash. Which is rarely.
Why own f/1.4 and f/2 glass only to use flash and stop down? That said, I do sometimes need that reach into the dark or a reliable bright light source with a reliable color temperature.
The older Nikon speedlights are the best in the world actually. Fully manual and I have never voluntarily turned the switch to TTL (use with an F4, F5, F100) since I don't like that loss of control.
Now using the R-D1, I get to think about the light just the same but TTL doesn't work so I still have that control.
It would be nice to have a much smaller flash with bounce capability (the SB's cause the R-D1 to flip upside-down if let go) but I'm not willing to trade the capability of the flash for something lesser IMO.

The SB-30 is both compact and has bounce capabilities.

Very small, fast, compact, bouncer and cheap ... have a look at the Metz 20 C-2.
Manual and automatic mode with 2.8 (400asa 14m/46ft) and 5.6 (400asa 7m/23ft). In fact I use 3.5 and 8 with straight flashing, but only in emergency ´cause I don´t like flash not at all. For a new one I paid 47€.
