M2 or M3? Robert or Shintaro? Either one, I bet it will be a masterpiece.

wow, ZoomP, you got a marvelous repaint M3. The painting looks similiar to that use by Nikon on its top line lens and even similar to the some painting on Voigtlander Bessa R serious. Definitely extreme handsome on a M3.

THanks bro. It's you who started me on the road to Leica. I will miss your Robert repaint M2, but I do like the VF on the M3 better since I am a 50mm guy.

How shallow of everyone here, just to fixate on how a camera looks.
Adrian - MAGNIFICENT job! Post details of how you did it!
Here's my late-lamented Shintaro M4:

For those that have gotton cameras painted by Shintaro, how long did it take. I got an email response from him of 1-2 months which I thought was a bit optomistic but sent in my camera anyways about 3 months ago. Recently, I've emailed him again but didn't receive a reponse and it's been 3 weeks since my inquiry.

Why wait save some money and do it yourself then when it gets a bit bashed and scratched you can do it again!

Not (entirely) a repaint
Not (entirely) a repaint
Started out with a 1955 7345xx DS chrome camera, pretty bad looking and partly dismantled. Converted it to black myself, but flaking started instantly.
Since then I bought a black MP (I think) bottomplate, an advance lever, a retaining ring for the lever and (best of all!) an original factory black top plate, never mounted before. Self timer lever omitted, GripTac installed, Gordie strap permanently attched, as is the Kyoei W.Acall 35/3.5 (just use whole finder for a 35 lens). The back door is original vulcanite, with glass pressure plate.
Current issues: the rewind knob, which has an (apparently rare-sized) worn down retaining screw. I can also use the two retaining rings for the flash terminals in black, anybody?

Because you have to strip the chrome off the camera before you can paint it, and the equipment and knowledge to do so are beyond what most of us can do.

I like the way you found parts and created your own BP M.
What I did was find a top and bottom and had Robert repaint them. The pieces were in newish condition, so the paint job looks almost perfect.

I used to have a black crinkle paint M3 painted by Shintaro. It went to a fellow in Singapore. It is this very camera.
Folks, couldn't resist and bought this from a fellow Leica buddies in Singapore. According to him, it's a Shintaro black paint and this one is a crackled black paint. Not sure if anyone else got this same finish from him? Camera is also CLA'd by DAG.
Anyway, here's some shots!! I love the viewfinder!! Can't wait to shoot some films. Will be using Sunny16 while my friend confirmed whether his MR4 is working.

Awesome bro!!! Yeah, he told me that he bought from someone in the States. It's been in his collection ever since till I managed to get it away from him. Haha!!! Care to share some history on this piece? PM me if u like. How intensive was the CLA done by DAG?

Oh Robert! You're such a tease!
This is such a beauty! I've always loved these black paint bodies with chrome bits and hopefully I'll have one of these Robert black paint M bodies soon!
Cheers,

For the DIY person. Getting the chrome off is easy, getting the nickel off a bit harder, getting a paint finish you are happy with, extremely frustrating!
i'm just doing an M4 that was a bit ragged and scratched. The top plate now looks great. Stripped to the brass with most imperfections taken out, which takes forever. Just the bottom plate to finish and then it will be in the forum ads!
