Hello folks,
I would like to get a hood for my Electro 35. Recently I bought a collapsible rubber hood, which turned out to obscure the rangefinder window, and as such was useless. Does onyone have an original hood, and could post the rough dimensions of it? I am going to the last local camera fair this weekend, and would like to pick up something similar if possible.
Best regards,
RoyM

Hi,
I was lucky enough to inherit a nice 35 GT with the original Yashica push on hood. Even this hood obscures the bottom right hand corner of the viewfinder frame. I have a screw in collapsible hood which is even worse. If you want a hood on the camera, you just have to put up with this 'feature'. It's a great camera and lens but it does suffer badly from flare if the sun is within about 45 degrees of the lens centre line. I'm not sure that the hood does anything at all to reduce this flare. I hope this helps.
Regards
Nick

I have the original hood. You can see it in this photo:

It's a slip-on type with a screw for tightening it up. Ask for a 57mm slip-on hood.

Thanks for the information so far, now two quick questions:
RoyM
- Is it better to avoid screw-in hoods due to vignetting?
- Is there a maximum length for the same reason?

Take a look at the tapered hoods offered by easystar2 and several others on eboy... they minimize the view obstruction.

If they still make them a Hama Hood 55mm will fit the Yashica GSN.

I knew I'd asked the very same question as you had sometime ago. Here's the link to the question and the answers I got in this forum's archive:

In short - the original rubber hood intrudes into the viewfinder. The metal one might not, but I suspect it will. In fact with a filter on the lens, no hood and the focussing distance set to minimum, the filter rim just creeps into the frame. You just have to live with it.

I've tried cylinder shaped 50mm screw-in metal hood, though it slightly vignettes. Now I attached hood from Konica Auto S2, it could be slightly shorter than original metal clamp-on as seen in Mablo's picture. Looking at picture, it looks to have very similar depth from outer edge of lens barrel to outer edge of hood.

Success! I found an Olympus hood - marked 55mm 1.2 - which is also a slide-on fit. I found a similar on on ebay here:

Better still, I paid £3!
It's a nice fit, and I will now try a roll of Ektar or Kodachrome - can't decide which....
Anyway, here is the resulting pair...

Whilst I'm at it, a quick plug (for UK subscribers) for the Wolverhampton Camera Fair:

It's the second time I've gone this year, and it was the biggest so far. Shame I only had 45 minutes before I had to leave to watch my son play football. Nevertheless, in the time I did have, I saw a few Yashicas, a number of 35 RC's, RD's and SP's!
I don't sell anything there - as my back balance will testify - but can throughly recommend it.
Best regards
