BBC photographer stopped from taking a picture @ St Pauls in London

I was going to get one of those high visibility vests with TERRORIST across the back, but my wife wouldn’t let me, anyway I expect the camera bag would be a sure-fire give away, some bright copper is bound to ask “you’re really a photographer, aren’t you sir”

It’s the condescending inflection of the “sir” bit that winds me up, I’ll take a tablet now in case someone mentions ID card ….

The other option is the old-school one, simply slip The Plod a £20 note. You'd be surprised the places you can get into.

What are you suggesting? It was shot in a famous part of London... and there was in Irish fella pottering around who looked a bit like Winston Churchill.

. . . Anyway, if you have frustrations like this of any kind, it's best to air them to those who you elect in and hassle them chronically . . .

Or write a magazine column about it (another one going in today about the latest ICO 'guidelines') and support the AP 'I am a photographer, not a terrorist' campaign.

Cheers,

R.

Absolutely, another good example I didn't think of. What I am saying is by all means vent on forums but don't let that be the only place it comes out, it has to be directed somewhere it will count. Many people have very good words and reasons for all to see on all matters on many forums, but so little of it seems to be directed into actual action.

The House of Commons has some very keen photographers amongst it's ranks, a photography club has existed there for years now, and many of these MPs are in full agreement with the concensus here and elsewhere. Lobby them, your local MP, the MP for the area in which you received any undue attention and the Police force concerned.

Nothing will happen quickly but change comes when one voice becomes many and those voices keep shouting.

Hope over experience I fear … with MPs in disgrace, and anyway when was the last time those in power allowed us to vote on anything important

Well, it adds a certain frisson to packing my Canonet for the upcoming weekend trip to London ... "No officer, taking pictures of my 20 month old son outside the church I was christened in is not a terrorist reconnaissance mission."

Yeah, but by the time he's a teenager he could have been radicalized...

When is there not an MP in disgrace?!

I have as little faith in MPs and the people that are 'in charge' of the system as you appear to Stewart, but I also have faith that The People ( not the 'Newspaper' obviously ) can and do change laws/legislation given weight of numbers and time. Sometimes these little victories come with a public fanfare whilst othertimes they're unheralded but the legislation is quietly dropped or ignored.

As the great prison philosopher Fletch once said "...it's all about the little victories...":D

Fortunately most of continental Europe is more level-headed most of the time, though I have my doubts about the Swiss and minarets.

Cheers,

R.
Well Roger when asked whether minarets construction should be prohibited in various countries, various polls showed the following :
- Germany, yes 86%
- Spain, yes 80%
- France, yes 73% (Le Figaro) (and 46% being against any sort of muslim church constructions)

So I guess it is a real concern and things are not as level-headed as we might think/wish. At least the Swiss people had a say through direct democracy which should be respected.

Although as someone mentioned previously we Brits aren't natural anarchists, radicals or revolutionaries, how could we be when we've built a collective culture based on our love of a shared grumble.

Come the revolution we'll all be grumbling about the lack of order and the fact our bins haven't been emptied for two weeks...hang on...

… don’t get me started on those bloody wheeliebins, what idiot eh, and Google as a verb! struth I even catch myself doing it now … That’s why I think one needs to go to trial, we just aren’t French enough we’re uncomfortable with a proper riot, but I would love to see the Law Lords slapping the Home Secretary around a bit.

PS And how come we’ve ended up with some spiv who looks, and sounds like a used car salesman as Home Secretary anyway.

PPS do we still have Law Lords?
