i...all i've heard people say is that the a12 unit has less noise at iso 1600, even though it's banding noise. the bokeh is nice, too, but probably not the result of any "optimizations."...

I guess you must think it's all by chance. Here's a thread on ISO 1600 color pictures taken with the GXR/A12 50mm EFOV lens. Beyond this you have a camera that allows you to use different formats — small senor, large sensor — while maintaining the same user interface and your own customized settings. This, simply, is a revolutionary camera and a new paradigm in terms of camera develoment, away from the paradigm of film cameras. But if people want to discuss only its price and how that compares to a GX200, which is on fire sale: go ahead, knock yourself

iso 1600 shows noise banding on those photos, too. there's one at 1600 that doesn't have much in shadow, and thus no banding.

iso 800 looks fine.

anyhow, still not impressed with being able to use 1/1.7'' sensors on this camera. if they wanted to get serious with that sensor format, the key factor is increasing lens speed.

Since two weeks I use a GRDIII driven by the superb pics of Mitch and some other guys here in Europe.
For me as an old fart and coming from the Bessas and Leicas, the UI is at the moment the maximum I can stand......

So when the GXR was introduced at first I thought 'Ohhh God, now I have to concentrate on different lenses AND different sensor sizes with diffferent DOF etc......BUT


We don't know what Ricoh has in the pipeline for the future. Say there will come a HDD for very convenient storage of RAWs and JPEGs without using a cardreader or other devices.
Or the special B&W sensor without any Bayer-filter an it. Or a sensor good for IR photography. or, or.....

So we have to judge right now this new system by the line up as it is but we should squeeze our imagination for future products which Ricoh easily can invent and produce.
Not in one shot for X-mas but in 2010 and later.

As a last word in my opinion the software of a GRD has a very high value compare to the standard UI of a Leica X1 which is the bottom line for more serious photographers.

Although I do agree with most that the GXR is pretty expensive but I do think the A12, having 1:2 magnification and able to focus down to 7cm, is the result of optimization of lens with sensor, right? Price aside, the other similar lens would be the Pentax DA LE 35/2.8 macro, though has 1:1 magnification, is about 0.3 stop slower and closest focusing distance is double of A12.

I think the GXR is an innovative idea but hopefully Ricoh will release a road map to instill some faith in the system's future.

I like Ricoh for my GX100, but a >USD1500 price for the GXR is just bizarre...

I am very excited by this development, and think as time goes by additional lens/sensor combos will be made available. You look at micro 4/3rds and there are a limited amount of lenses available, but we all know more will be coming soon. Same with the GXR. On paper the GXR/50mm combo comes the closest to a digital Hexar AF so far. I sense good things coming from this in the near future.....

Nope... too much for this unit. But then again, you have to pay for innovation generally. I'd much rather have a GRD IV with a large sensor than this frankenstein camera.

One other thing I like about the GXR is the use of a leaf shutter rather than a focal plane shutter. You are able to support higher flash sync speeds and it is quieter. Just consider, Leica charges an extra $1K for the leaf shutter version of their S2 lenses and they haven't announced when they will start shipping them.
