Hello all,

Hoping some of you people in here can help me out a bit.
I need a hood for my newly acquired Canon 50mm 1.2. I was tempted to buy the original hood until I saw a picture of it on the lens. Man, that is way to huge!

So, can anyone help me suggest a hood for this one? I have seen a few on ebay, but I a bit worried about vignetting........

I would love a square hood for this one tho, but that might be to much to ask for 🙂

I did a search on the forums, but didn't really get any wiser.

Thank you all 🙂

Chris

Photobizz who is a member here was asking about hoods for this lens a while ago and managed to get something he was happy with. It was being discussed in this thread that he started after getting his lens from KEH!

The standard hood is rather large but it's extremely well designed and creates little viewfinder restriction ... expensive though! 🙁

Great lens ... hope you enjoy it. 🙂

I bought a (57 or 58 mm, I don't remember) collapsible rubber slip-on hood new for about 10€ on ebay. I had to put a couple of short pieces of clear tape inside the ring for making the fit a little bit tighter. The fit is a bit different with different kind of filters, which is boring, but luckily not a big issue.

The hood blocks about 10% of the rangefinder when in extended position. It's bothering a bit, but not very serious, at least with both eyes open.

Of course a 55mm screw-in would also fit, but I have preferred slip-ons for faster use with filters. But well, I don't even use filters that much. And this can come off if it gets stuck somewhere.

Luckily, it's just the hood, not the lens.

The original hood looks and handles fine when mounted - it's only from the front that it looks huge. Virtually no blocking of the finder, either.

Cost-wise it's about the same as the lens itself. Worth it, in my experience, but... ouch!

50mm f1.2 hood

50mm f1.2 hood

I found a screw in 55mm Konica hood for their 52mm f1.8, 57mm f1.4 or 85mm f1.8 in a scrap box at a local camera store for about $2 that fits the lens just right. Works well on my M8, M2 and M6.

The original hood is larger in diameter than necessary, so that you'll be looking along the edge of it through the finder. If it was smaller, there would be more blockage. (Remember how some Leica hoods are reverse tapered?)

I think it's quite impressive looking.

Thanks all 🙂
I actually haven't decided on a hood yet.....
But as I guess all of you have this lens, or at least have used it, do you know what UV/IR filter to use on this one? Does the Leica E55 fit?
I got some serious magenta issues in certain light.

I hace tried both Leica & Heliopan E55 UV/IR on the Canon50mmf1.2. They fit ok.

Again, even a normal filter causes the lens to vignette. To reproduce, set it at f5.6 or above, and focus at infinity (for instance the sky).

You need a thin 55mm filter (Hoya makes good ones), and a push on hood.

Of course, wide open and close up, or on a crop camera, the vignetting will go away.

Roland.

After considerable searching, I lucked-out and found a dealer that had one for $90, with the original Canon case. I always use the hood, along with original Canon 55mm Slimline filters. And I have a Rodenstock plastic LF lenscap, that fits tightly on the F1.2 hood, when on M5.

Used it Friday night at a -very- dark event, fired-off two rolls, glad I had F1.2 with me.
